While recent advances in space system design have led to increasingly complex spacecraft and mission objectives, importance of the monitoring system to acquire visual images of spacecraft is rapidly increasing. Visual images are effective for checking the deploying process in normal situations, and are also quite important in the case of anomalies wherein we cannot cover the whole system with sensors and predict where the unexpected anomalies may occur. Addition to the situation monitoring, new type applications including amusement such as Google earth, are emerging rapidly. If we can get visual images in orbit in very low cost, we can expected that more applications will be emerged over our current commonsense. The resources of monitoring system, such as size and cost, expected to be reduced as much as possible, when weconsider it is a part of support or maintenance system. We developed a very small, high-performance image acquiring and processing unit based on COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) technologies. It has a 500 MIPS calculation capability in a single 46 mm × 46 mm printed circuit board, and it incorporates various types of interfaces using field-programmable gate array (FPGA) technology. The high-performance image acquiring and processing unit is utilized in various kind of missions, such as IKAROS, Hayabusa2, and RiseSat. In this paper, the outline of the high-performance image acquiring and processing unit and examples of its applications.

Japanese Experiment Module - Pressurized Module (JEM-PM) was launched to the International Space Station (ISS) on the STS-124 (1J) in June 2008. The KOBAIRO rack developed by IHI Aerospace (IA) under the contract with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) was installed on JEM-PM in January 2011. This report describes a Gradient Heating Furnace (GHF) and sample cartridges developed for microgravity experiments.

IHI Aerospace Co., Ltd. (IA) has been developed the experiment cell for Solution Crystallization Observation Facility (SCOF) under the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). SCOF is one of the two facilities in Solution/Protein Crystal growth Facility (SPCF) for Japan Experiment Module (JEM), called “KIBO”. The developments of four experiment cells were finished and the on-orbit experiments of three experiment cells were completed. This report introduces the development of experiment cells.

IHI AEROSPACE Co.,Ltd (IA) had been developed the Protein Crystallization Research Facility (PCRF) and High Density Protein Crystallization Cell unit (HDPCC) under the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). PCRF is one of the two facilities in Solution/Protein Cristal growth Facility (SPCF) for Japanese Experiment Module (JEM), called “Kibo“. PCRF has been launched using Shuttle at STS-123 mission in March 11, 2008. HDPCC is one of component for JAXA highquality protein crystal growth experiment (JAXA PCG). HDPCC has been launched and returned by Progress and Soyuz spaceship from 2009 to 2013, high-quality protein crystal growth experiment was performed six times so far, and various high important results are provided.

The lecture introduces how to make a microcomputer-controlled, electronic device for a beginner. A series of lectures provides not only how to measure a physical property with an electronic sensor, convert it to a digit (analog digital conversion), switch on and off an electronic circuit with FET (Field Effect Transistor), and control those with a microcomputer but also practical know-how to design an actual electronic circuit, choose appropriate electronic parts, and mount those to a PCB (printed-circuit board), with explaining how to make “an acceleration switch”. The switch can automatically turn on and off a connected device according to an acceleration level measured with an acceleration sensor and contribute to parabolic flight experiments through size reduction of an apparatus, less operation, and precise control of the experiments.
