Equipment failure in anesthesia management may result in serious complications. Therefore, a periodic inspection of anesthetic machines is important to prevent these mishaps. In our operating rooms, a periodic inspection of the machines has been conducted by anesthesiologists since June, 1980. Fifteen anesthetic machines are inspected every month. In 79 inspections carried out during the past six years, we detected equipment failures or abnormalities on 131 occasions. This corresponds to an abnormality rate of 1.7 per each period of inspecton. The breakdown of equipment failure is : 38 times in the body of the machine, 41 times in the head, 18 times in infant circle, 17 times in connecting apparatus, and 17 in the ventilator. Abnormality or railure was frequently found in the following four parts of the machines : i.e. APL valve, pressure manometer, vaporizer and carbon dioxide absorber.Solution for these problems depends on prompt replacement of the faulty parts. Since anesthetic machines are used almost every day, we recommend that an inspection of the machines should be done at monthly intervals.
