The Show Heated Scalpes is used to minimize blood loss. We studied the advantage of this new scalpel during operations for breast cancer retrospectively. We divided patients into two groups.Group I (n=206) : modified radical mastectomya under hypoetnsive anesthesia with the Shaw Heated Scalpel.Group II (n=535) : without this new scalpel. The blood loss and the operation time of Group I is 147.9±89.7 g, 110.6±35.2 min, whereas each of Group II is 255.3±126.0 g, 116.9±35. 3min. respectively. The Shaw Heated Scalpel reduced blood loss to about 60% and shortened the operation time to about six minutes. This new scalpel minimizes blood loss by simultaneously sealing blood vessels as they are cut with minimum tissue damage. In comparison to electrosurgical devices, this new scalpel pases no electrical current through the patient, so there is no muscle stimulation and accidental electrical current burns. This new scalpe can be used together with explosive anesthetics and also for patients with pacemaker. Moreover this new scalpel maintains a clean, dry surgical field and shortens surgery. This new scalpel has a lot of advantages to minimize blood transfusions and also the occurrence of postoperative hepatitis, AIDS and other cmplications. The advantage of using the Shaw Heated Scalpel more than makes up for its operating costs.
