Removal of leukocytes from platelet concentrated has benefits in the prevention or delay of alloimmunization and the prevention of nonhaemolytic febrile reactions, as well as improving platelet increments in heavily transfused alloimmunized patients receiving HLA-matched platelets.Of the several methods to remove leukocytes in blood products, filtration may be the most reliable mothod. We have evaluated two new leukocyte removal filters for platelet concentrates, the Pall PL 100 and PL 50,to determine their effectiveness in removing leukocytes. The effects of filtration on the platelet functions were also tested. The small numbers of leukocytes which still contaminated the leukocyte-depleted platelet concentrates were determined by two methods, flow cytometry and the cytospin method. The leukocyte removal rates of the Pall PL 100 and PL 50 were 99.59 ± 0.31% (n=6) and 99.992 ± 0.002% (n=3), respectively. In vitro platelet recovery was higher than 89% with both filters, and filtered platelets maintained their normal functions. Thus, these new leikocyte removal filters for platelet concentrates shold help to improve transfusion therapy.
