      Graphite in cast iron is believed to solve later than the matrix. The behavior of graphite in rapidly melted and rapidly solidified cast iron has been observed using a spot welder. It became clear that the kish graphite in pig iron does not disolve very easily and disperses in the melt as particles and acts as effective substrates for the crystallization of graphite.

      Technical experiences and intuitions of foundry engineers have helped solving problems in the foundry process. In this study, the influence of foundry and molding line equipments and their operation on casting defects was clarified by statistical analysis. From the results of analysis of technical factors in the production process obtained by questionnaires from about sixty foundry shops, it was found that sand mark is an important defect of casting in the green sand molding line and that molding speed, molding pressure and mixing time are the main factors causing it. This result is consistent with conventional technical experiences.

      Thermal conductivity of green molding sand is useful in calculating thermal conduction of moisture condensation zone and it heat analysis of system sand. A measurement apparatus was made by wire heating method. Alternating current of a few watts was fed into the thermocouple burried in the test piece, and thermal conductivity was measured by the rate of temperature evolution of the thermocouple. It was measured from riddled density (apparent density is about 0.6) to apparent density 1.6. When density was lowered, thermal conductivity became low exponentially, and when the moisture content was raised, it became high. It is better to interpret that moisture was present as bentonite paste and not in the liquid state. Thermal conductivity model of green molding sand was made by applying Eucken's model. The calculation of thermal conductivity of bentonite paste by changing bentonite/moisture ratio was in good agreement with the experimental results. Thermal conductivity was hardly influenced by temperature between 20°C and 80°C.

      The mechanism of blow hole formation in cast steel was investigated by direct observation of the meniscus behavior of the molten steel near the sand mold wall. The experiments were carried out by pouring molten steel into six different types of sand molds with organic binders. The decomposed gas from the sand mold disturbs the formation of normal meniscus. The gas is easily led into the molten steel from the perturbed meniscus and remains as blow holes after solidification. It was found that the turbulent movement of the meniscus was observed in the viscinity of the mold with phenol resin and with urea-furan resin and that blow holes formed near the cast surface in these sand molds. It was concluded that the blow hole formation is strongly related to the perturbation of meniscus of molten steel near the mold wall by the decomposed gas from the mold.
