The permeability of sand molds is expressed in the following equation applying Kozeny Carman's equation of packed bed.
P=12
ε3⁄(1-
ε)
2S
v2μwhere
ε and
μ are void fraction of sand mold and viscosity of air. S
v is surface area per unit volume of mixture of sand and binder, and is expressed as:
S
v=6
φs ⁄ D
p where
φs and D
p are shape factor of sand mold and diameter of sand particle. The shape factor varies from 0.7 to 1.7 and the value becomes smaller for round sand particles. For the same sand particle, the shape factor decreases in order of green sand mold, furan resin bonded sand mold and CO
2 mold. The shape factor of CO
2 mold is smallest, because the surface of the binder is smooth and the narrow space between sand particles decreases. The shape factor of green sand mold using sand of different sizes increases about 20%. Configuration of void differs from that using sand of single size.
