To investigate the improvement of mechanical properties and rolling-rubbing abrasion-characteristics of three kinds of ion nitrided cast iron, the microstructure of surface, X-ray diffraction, residual stress and so on were analyzed. The results obtained were summarized as follows :
      (1)  The hardness increased by four times or so, and the tensile strength was much the same before and after nitriding treatment. The impact value was the same or showed a tendency to decrease.
      (2)  In spite of the change of melting conditions, the abrasion-resistance characteristics of all ion nitrided cast iron were improved. Especially, in this experimental conditions, the improvement·rate of cast iron by energy-saving·melting was the highest.
      (3)  EPMA of the films of the ion nitrided cast iron had shown that from the superficies to 10∼30μm nitrogen·concentration was very high and at the inner part nitrogen diffused.
      (4)  By analyzing the X-ray diffraction and residual stress of the superficies of abrasive test pieces of every rolling-rubbing distance, ε phase (Fe2-3N) and γ' phase (Fe4N) were confirmed as far as 1000 meters where abrasion didn't progress much. Until the quantity of abrasion increased rapidly, residual stress was little.

Shear rate dependence of the viscosity was investigated using hard-particle/molten-aluminium-alloy composite slurries to clarify the possibility of die-casting for these metal base composite materials. Relationships between the shear rate and the shear stress were measured on alumina particle/aluminium-copper alloy composite slurries with various volume fractions of the particle. A double cylinder type high temperature viscosity meter was made for this purpose. Measurements were carried out at 650°C, where the matrix alloy were in liquid state.
The liquid alloy without particles had almost constant viscosity in the range of shear rate from 10/s to 280/s. On the other hand, the thixotropy was observed for all composite slurries at shear rates below 100/s. The thixotropy grew strong with increasing the volume fraction of particle. In the range from 100/s to 280/s, viscosities of slurries below 20% particle changed little. The viscosity of the slurry with 30vol% particle, however, increased explicitly at shear rates above 200/s. This dilatancy was considered to be due to the collision of particles. This phenomenon was reduced by the particle's sphericity.

Preforms of precipitation-hardenable stainless steel fibers (SUS631, 50 μm×100μm×3mm) with an uni-directional alignment were prepared in a magnetic field by applying the ferromagnetism of a strain induced martensite. The superimposed magnetic field was generated by A. C. and D. C. solenoid coils, and an iron core, The fiber distribution in the preform had an improved average alignment angle of 3.3° and an improved average volume fraction of 45%.
Fibrous preforms were then infiltrated by a molten magnesium alloy (MC2) with a vacuum casting at 973K. After the infiltration, SUS631 stainless steel fibers were precipitation-hardened at 773K for 3.6ks. Three-points bending tests at room temperature and high temperatures, and four-points bending fatigue tests were carried out on the composites. The SUS631/MC2 composites had, the bending strength of 835MPa at room temperature (290K), 809MPa at 423K and 469MPa at 573K, and the fatigue strength of 192MPa.
