As a basic study of deformation behavior of castings, measurements were made on warping of the bottom of Pb-Sn alloy disks unidirectionally solidified on a chill plate. Despite the flat chill plate, the shape of the bottom after casting was parabolically convex towards downward. Deformation was large in pure Pb, pure Sn and eutectic Pb-Sn composition. Deformation was small and sometimes concave in other alloy compositions with solidification tempeature range. Cause of the deformation is an integrated thermoelastic deformation of the growing solid shell, due to decreasing temperature gradient in the solid during solidification, which is particularly pronounced in alloys with a single solidification temperature. This is considered to be one of the basic deformation behaviors of castings.
