A three dimensional simulation model based on Navier-Stokes equation has been developed to analyze cavity filling process in die casting. Computer simulation has been done using SMAC (Simplified Marker and Cell) method. Simulation results are given for cavities of three types to predict flow behavior, air entrapment, vortex generation and so on. Areas where filling is delayed and hence vents should be arranged are pointed out from the simulation. The present three dimensional analysis gives useful informations for reasonable injection designing in practical die casting.

A series of cold model experiments using water have been carried out in order to study flow behavior in a die cavity. The experiments have been done with the cavities of three types. Local filling time was measured and fluid flow behavior was observed with a high speed camera. The vortices and delay of filling time in the particular region, and air entrapment were shown to occur, which are also important defects often seen in practical die casting. The flow front movement and the local filling time obtained by the experiments were compared with a three-dimensional computer simulation. The simulation is shown to be reasonable and to give useful suggestions on desirable die casting filling conditions.

A new fluidized bed boriding fumace system was applied to the surface modifying of S. G. Iron and S45C Steel. The tests were made on the hardnessmeasurements, the microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, the electron microprobe X-ray analyzer, and the sliding wear characteristics under dry condition of boronized specimens.
As a result, the boronized layers on both the S. G. Iron and S45C Steel consisted of two inter-metallic compounds (FeB, Fe2B), and the boronized S. G. Iron and S45C Steel showd far better wear resistance than the softnitrided S. G. Iron and S45C Steel.
It was found that the fluidized bed boriding method could be successfully applied to the surface modifying of S. G. Iron and S45C Steel.

Influence of pearlite on the mechanical property of austempered spheroidal graphite cast iron (ADI) was examined by tensile test, Charpy impact test and Ono-type fatigue test. The conclusion hereinafter was shown from the results. 1) The tensile strength is estimated by hardness only. 2) The impact absorption energy lower as pearlite is increases. It is estimated that the above result is attributable to lowering of plastic deformation ability of bainite structure by low ductility of pearlite. 3) The fatigue limits lower as pearlite is increases. It is estimated that the above result is attributable to pearlite of easy crack generation and propagation about graphite.

Diffusion bonding of spheroidal graphite cast iron (FCD45) to austenitic stainless steel (SUS304) were carried out at the temperature from 800°C to 1050°C in vacuum (∼10-4mmHg). Microscopic observation, X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation have been employed in order to clarify the interfacial characterization at the bonding interface. The tensile strength of the joints was also investigated.
In the SUS304 adjacent to the bonding interface, the percipitation of chromium carbides were observed which were formed owing to the diffusion of carbon from the FCD45 to the SUS304. The fracture of the joint occurred at the position of the precipitation of chromium carbides. The tensile strength of this joint is lower than that of the FCD45. When nickel interlayer was used. the tensile strength of the joint was nearly equal to that of the FCD45.
Chromium carbides were not formed at the SUS304 side near the bonding interface of the joint with copper and Cu-Ni alloy interlayer, though that were formed with nickel interlayer.
