Effects of welding method on the sand erosion resistance in the Fe-(15, 25) mass % Cr-(3.1, 3.8) mass % C-3 mass % Ni white cast iron hardfacing alloys depsited by manual TIG welding and Gas welding were studied by measuring the wear loss and compared with that of sand erosion resistance of unidirectional solidified alloys. The sand erosion resistance of hardfacing alloy deposited by TIG welding and Gas welding are almost same to that of unidirectional solidified alloys. The wear loss of hardfacing alloys deposited by TIG welding is a little superior to that of hardfacing alloys deposited by Gas welding, while there is not large difference for the sand erosion resistance in both weldings.

Effects of inhibitor addition and corrosion resistance on the sand erosion resistance in the Fe-(15, 25 mass) % Cr-(0, 3 mass) % Ni-(2.8, 3.8 mass) % C white cast irons were studied in different testing conditions by measuring the weight loss and measurement of anodic polarization curves. In corrosive testing conditions, the better combinations of wear loss and corrosive resistance are obtained for high chromium white cast irons. Addition of 0.01∼0.02 mol/L inhibitor improves wear loss of 15 Cr alloy in corrosive conditions at 305 K and has little effect on the wear loss in abrasive conditions at 288 K.

In the cupola operation, the height of cokebed is one of the decisive factors in maintaining proper melting conditions. Using a small size experimental cupola, a series of test operation was performed and the operating variables including tapping temperature were measured. After the given period of operating time, melting was forced to cease and the contents of the cupola stack were examined. A simplified differential equation has been applied to construct a model by which the variation of cokebed height can be simulated, and the estimated results were compared with the actual bed height, yielding fairly good accordance between them.

CO2 laser was used for deburring with cutting process of spheroidal graphite cast iron. The area of molten zone, area of heat affected zone and cut width were investigated as two functions of cutting speed and laser power. The areas of molten zone and heat affected zone increase as the cutting speed and the laser power increase, and result the lowest value with laser power of 200 W, cutting speed of 100 mm/min in this experimental conditions. The cut width increases as the laser power increases but is almost unchanged by varying the cutting speed. The microstructure of molten zone is observed a fine ferritic structure and heat affected zone becomes completely a hard martensitic matrix. CO2 laser cutting process can be considered applicable to deburring of spheroidal graphite cast iron because the molten zone and the heat affected zone can be controlled as the laser power and the cutting speed are controlled.

A great volume of experimental results in the past have been summarized on the influences of additional elements on the graphitization in cast irons. To understand more deeply and comprehensively these results from a theoretical view point, the energy of cementite has been calculated by the use of extended Hückel tight binding method. The calculation has reproduced the experimental results. Based upon these results of calculation, the mechanism of the influences of additional elements on the graphitization in cast irons has been discussed with the aid of the knowledge of the structure of cementite and its nature of chemical bonds.
