To study the influence of silicon on the structure and characteristics of the boride layer in S. G. Iron, the test specimens, which had silicon contents of 1.03 to 3.05 %, were boronized for 3 minutes to 2 hours at temperatures of 1073 to 1173 K. The test specimens have been boronized with the boronizing powders which were composed of SiC, B4C and KBF4 in the fluidized bed boriding furnace system and subsequently oil-quenched from the boronizing temperatures. The apparent diffusion coefficient D and the apparent activation energy Q for diffusion of boron into S. G. Iron were decided by the production rate of boride layer. It was found that the value Q which had been obtained from the specimens with high silicon content was lower than from the specimens with low silicon content. In any event, the values appeared to be inconsistent with that for diffusion of boron into γ or α irons, but nearly consistent with that of silicon. When the boride layer grows into the irons, the silicon amount in the zone adjoining the boride layer rises in the early stages to such an extent that it, even at a temperature of 1173 K, results in the formation of the α-phase zone just ahead of the boride layer (between the boride layer and the basis metal).

With a view to prevent the partial solidification of metal in the shot sleeve in aluminum die casting process, heat transfer coefficients of molten metal in the shot sleeve coated with insulating powder were investigated. They were determined by measuring the temperatures of a chill block, and also by simulating solidification in the sleeve. As a result it was found that both methods gave almost the same value, and that the heat transfer coefficients decreased approximately to 1/15 or 0.5 kW / ( m2 K ) by coating with insulating powder. The value was estimated to be sufficient to prevent the formation of solidified layers in the shot sleeve.

The effect of ion nitriding on tensile and impact fatigue strength was investigated in ferritic and pearlitic spheroidal graphite cast irons. The nitride layer that formed on the surface of specimens was about 10μm thick and the hardened layer width was 150 to 200μm. The tensile strength of ion nitrided specimens decreased by about 30 MPa and 130 MPa respectively for ferrite and pearlite structures. The impact fatigue life of ion nitrided specimens was appreciably shorter than that of non-treated specimens for both ferrite and pearlite structures. Microcracks were initiated across the hardened layer by the first impact strike regardless of the matrix structure in ion nitrided specimens, while many cycles were needed for crack formation in non-treated specimens. It was found that the decrease of impact fatigue life in ion nitrided specimens was caused by the presence of the hardened layer which made cracks easy to initiate.

This report is concerned with transition of temperature on the core center, case of poured cast iron and aluminium alloy into the molds by using freezing process core. Consequently, it was showed that the temperature curves had the discontinuous points resulted from the vaporization of residued L-N2 and the phase change of moisture. In comparison with cast iron, the temperature curves of aluminium alloy did not show the non-moisture part, where the temperature rising continuously occurs with the time elapsed, and the increase of temperature rising time is by 1.5∼3.0 times at the non-temperature rising part, the solid phase temperature rising part and the liquid phase one. Influence of the castings thickness, the core moisture and the core particle size of silica sand, was clearly proved on the alminium alloy casting at the low temperature, and at the liquid phase temperature rising part, the decrease of temperature rising time are 10 sec in 3∼4 % moisture, 7∼9 sec in 5∼20mm thickness and 5 sec in 149∼210μm particles size.

In continuous dry cutting, performance of whisker reinforced ceramic tools was investigated using the gray cast iron with various ferrite phase content as the workpiece. On the machining of gray cast iron containing up to 10 vol % ferrite phase, Al2O3 + SiCw ceramic tool exhibited the tool life which is equivalent for the gray cast iron containing 0.5 vol % ferrite phase. The life of Si3N4 + SiCw ceramic tool for the machining of gray cast iron containing a small amount of ferrite phase was rather short. However, the tool life for the case of gray cast iron with large amount of ferrite phase was short for both Si3N4 + SiCw and Al2O3 + SiCw ceramic tools. Flank wear face of SiCw reinforced ceramic tools changed smoother with increasing ferrite phase content of the workpiece materials. In static heating test, it was observed diffusing of Fe into SiCw occurred.
