      Measurements were made on the temperature and cooling rate of metal surface irradiated from the Nd : YAG laser (CW or short pulse, max., output 150 W) with the surface radiance in the range of IR wave length. High speed PIN Si photodiode was used to measure the radiance. The time resolving power, as the measurement system, was 100 ns. The surface temperature of S15CK metal rised up with increase of the laser power and decreased with the traveling speed of laser. The highest temperature on the surface was about 2000 K in these irradiated metals. The cooling rate was about 103∼104 K/s in use of the CW laser and was over 108 K/s in that of the Q-switched laser.

      The surface of the ferritic ductile cast iron was transformed into the hard eye structure by laser treatment, and its impact toughness was investigated. Only surroundings of graphite nodule were reinforced by martensite phase so that this surface structure has the ductility with certain strength without embrittlement by the formation of hard martensitic network. With the controlled laser treatment operation, obtained hard eye structure was more ideal than that with another heating and quenching method. The Charpy impact values of this hard eye material was compared with those of the conventionally laser-treated ductile irons using unnotched specimens. For the iron with remelted surface or with all martensitic matrix one, its impact value is about one half the value for ferritic ductile iron. The hard eye material shows higher Charpy value than those of conventionally treated irons and has the toughness adjacent to the value for ferritic iron.

      The aim of this investigation is the clarification of the influences of additional elements (M) both on the refinement of eutectic silicon and on the improvement of mechanical properties and the mechanism of refinement of eutectic silicon in Al-Si cast alloys. Te, Ba, Ce and Bi are chosen as modifier elements because these elements have characteristics common with the other elements used as modifier elements in the past. Further, more improvement of mechanical properties has been tried by the simultaneous addition of 1 % Cu and 1 % Mg to the Si-refined Al-Si alloys. All these additional elements have the effect of refinement of eutectic silicon. The mechanism of refinement may be as follows. During Al-Si-M ternary eutectic solidification, a large number of silicon crystals are nucleated preferentially in the boundaries between pre-existing phases such as AlxMy compounds which are formed through preceding Al-M binary eutectic reactions. The growth of their nuclei is hindered and suppressed by their pre-existing phases such as AlxMy compounds, which results in the refinement of eutectic silicon. As for the mechanical properties, the addition of Te is most effective for the improvement of strength and elongation. In the Bi-added alloys containing 1 % Cu and 1 % Mg, tensile strength of 362 MPa, Brinell hardness of 94 and elongation of 10 % are achieved in heat-treated state. It is suggested that the improvements of toughness in these Al-Si cast alloys may correspond to the change of orbital energy in DV-Xα molecular orbital calculation by the addition of Te, Sb or Bi to aluminium clusters.

      The influence of solid fraction on thixotropic behavior of partially solidified alloy slurry was investigated by using hypoeutectic Al-Cu alloy. Speeds of viscosity shift caused by shear rate change were used to estimate the thixotropy. The shear rate increased abruptly, then elapsed time dependencies of viscosity decrease were measured for slurries had various solid fraction. Slurries in the solid fraction range between 50 % and 70 % showed most immediate fluidity recovery. This fraction range agreed with the fraction range derived by an assumption. That is, the aggregation of solid particles lowered the effective liquid fraction at lower shear rate by liquid phase entrapping. From these results and observation of microstructure of slurries, it was found that the apparent solid fraction change was responsible for the thixotropy of this alloy.

      Shear rate dependencies of viscosity on hypereutectic Al-Si alloy at eutectic temperature were investigated by constant shear rate test and abrupt shear rate change test with a double cylinder type high temperature viscosity meter. Shears, which were applied to specimen slurries at eutectic temperature during solidification, separated fine silicon particles from the eutectic. These fine silicon particles aggregated with large primary silicon plates especially under lower shear rate. Also, separated alpha phase formed particles and collected each other. Higher shear rate dispersed these aggregation and released entrapped liquid. This alloy at eutectic temperature showed better tendency to thixotropy than hypoeutectic Al-Cu alloy, which had only primary alpha particles as solid.

      On the production of ductile iron by Inmold process, both reaction chamber dimension and employed spheroidizing alloy are sincerely of much significance. It is important that the excessively or insufficiently spheroidized molten iron must be prevented to cast into the product mold cavity. In this experiment, the flow of molten iron was controlled under the cavity with the constant cross sectional area. The structure of castings which was entrapped into several thin specimen ends of the sand mold was observed. The transition of graphite structure from spheroidal to fine flaky was certainly observed with the continuous specimens. Special precaution should be taken to adopt this process on spheroidization of cast iron.
