Semi-solid aluminum alloys were pressure-cast by a horizontal die casting machine and a vertical die casting machine. Soundness, structures, mechanical properties and dimensional accuracy of semi-solid products and die thermal load were investigated. Semi-solid metal up to 0.6 fraction solid is nealy able to fill the cavity of 1.5 mm thickness when semi-solid metal is cast at gate speed of over 30 m/s and casting pressure of over 100 MPa by a horizontal die casting machine. Semi-solid products made by a vertical die casting machine have a primary grain diameter of about 100 μm, less macrosegregation and less gas content. The tensile strength and elongation of the products are nearly the same as those of liquid metal products, while the reduction of macrosegregation, the reduction of die thermal load and the enhancement of dimensional accuracy, all of which are features of semi-solid metal, are ensured.
