In large-size aluminum gravity die castings which use many sand cores, the strength of castings often scatters in the parts which solidify for a long time and have coarse microstructures. In order to clarify the factor affecting the scatter, the effect of porosity morphology on the strength was studies by comparing JIS AC2B alloy castings with the test castings. The experimental results reveal that the amount of porosity does not directly affect the scatter of the strength, because the scatter is large enough even when the amount of porosity is mutually equal in volume or in area. However, the pore shape in the fractured face is found to be related to the scatter. The strength is lower as the minimum of roundness factor of pore becomes smaller, that is, as the pore shape becomes more complicated.

Optical Measurement was examined to measure the cooling rate of the thin ribbon produced by splat cooling of single roller. The temperature measurements of metal surface were made by the surface radiance in the range of IR wave length, and high speed PIN Si photodiode was used to measure the radiance. The cooling rate (V) of the thin sample is proportional to the rotational speed (R) over a range from 500 to 4000 rpm, and it is V = 2.42 × 102R in Fe-C-P system alloy and is V = 2.20 x 102R in Fe-Ni-B system alloy. The critical cooling rate of amorphous ribbon is about 2.1 × 105∼2.4 × 105 K/s in Fe-C-P system alloy and is about 8.3 × 105∼8.4 × 105 K/s in Fe-Ni-B system alooy, and those critical cooling rates change the value depending on the composition of the alloy. This optical measurement may be very useful to determine the cooling rate of the sample moving at high speed, by non-contact measurement.

The bagfilter deodorizing process with the artificial zeolite (AZ) as the fly ash-derived product was developed and it was tried to apply to deodorize the bad smell from the sand molds during molding and pouring in foundry. It was confirmed that this process had the effect of deodorizing the bad smell in foundry.

Boron is reported to be as one of the disturbing elements for graphite spheroidization, and also promote cementite in matrix structure. All of these investigations were performed in the addition of more than 0.004 % B. This report deals extremely small addition of boron in spheroidal graphite cast iron. Boron added of ppm-order in the form of ferro-boron makes bull's eye ferrite in pearlite matrix, and haven't any effects on nodule count. SIMS analysis clarified that boron is distributed around graphite nodule which is surrounded by ferrite. So, some kind of borocarbide is presumed to serve as a substrate for the nucleation of ferrite.

Feasibility of casting stellite alloy into various tube forms by the vertical OCC process has been investigated. By selecting appropriate casting parameters and mold designs, stellite No. 1 alloy has been successfully continuously cast for the first time into tubes and tubes with internal fins. It was found that the location of the solid-liquid interface was critical in order to obtain the dimensional stability of the cast products. It must be maintained as close as possible to the mold exit (outside the mold) to obtain the identical shapes as defined by the mold. It was also found that an appropriate core design was important to facilitate uniform metal flow into the mold cavity. This metal flow can be further assisted by providing vibrations to the mold before casting. It was further found that the core extension of about 1.5 mm outside the mold was sufficient to avoid the liquid metal flowing into the tube cavity created by the core. The cast structure has been examined. It was found that the products have unidirectional and uniform structures.
