In various cases of pulmonary tuberculosis, the author conducted measurements of electrolytes in serum and urine before and after the administration of adrenocortical hormone. Results were as follow:
1. In mild cases, no remarkable change was found, but in medium or severe cases, especially in active cases, Na, Ca and Cl became low, K high, i, e., smaller Na/K and larger K/Ca.
2. With the injection of Rindex (1cc per 10kg), no remarkable change was observed in mild cases, but in medium cases Na in serum increased a little, K decreased slightly, i, e., Na/K became larger, K/Ca smaller. In serious cases both Na and Cl increased and Ca slightly, while K decreased, i, e., Na/K became larger, K/Ca smaller. Variation in urine of medium cases was almost similar to that in serum, while mostly in severe cases it was not. Those variations disappeared in 180 minutes after the injection.
3. By subcutaneous injection of Rindex (1cc per day for 2 weeks successively), variation in serum of mild cases was very slight, and in medium cases, Na and Cl increased, K decreased, and as for Ca the results were diverse, i, e., Na/K increased and K/Ca decreased. In serious cases, Na, Cl and Ca altogether increased, while K decreased, i. e., Na/K increased and K/Ca decreased. This variation was most remarkable in serious cases, and it recovered by 10 days after the final injection. In the urine of mild cases, Na decreased by the injection while K increased, i, e., Na/K decreased. In medium cases, Na, K, Cl altogether decreased, but Na/K was diverse. In serious cases, Na, K and Cl increased and K began to decrease 7th day and 14th, i, e., Na/K decreased by 7 days and recovered by 14 days. Thus the variations in urine were diverse. Perhaps that is due to the differences in the quantity of water taken, function of kidney, and circulating system, togetherwith quantity of perspiration and kinds of food taken in each cases.
