Spirometry and bronchospirometry were conducted on the tuberculosis cases in which pulmonary resection had been done. The following results were obtained:
1) The vital capacity, the complementary air and the reserve air decreased markedlyy immediately after the operation. These increased gradually, however, even by 1 year, these did not reach the pre-operational levels.
2) As for the minute volume and the oxygen intake per minute, there was a tendency of decrease after the operation in most cases.
3) The tidal air slightly decreased in the cases, on whom lobectomy, segmental resection, or partial resection and thoracoplasty were performed, but a little increase was noticed in the group of cases, on whom one of the above mentioned operations and phrenicotomy were done.
4) The maximum breathing capacity decreased slightly immediately after the operations. However, by five months, it increased and became greater than the pre-operational levels.
5) The vital capacity of the operated lung decreased remarkably and its ratio of lungs also decreased. The vital capacity of opposite lung in the thoracoplasty or combined phrenicotomy group decreased and in the segmental resection group it increased.
