In 4K video production, one of the most critical problems is focus adjustment difficulty. In this paper, we propose a new compact focus assist system for 4K cameras. The system enables easy 4K camera focusing using a low-resolution viewfinder.

Some lenses for photograph and 4K cinema are useful for single-chip 8K cameras. We developed a lens adaptor and a protocol converter for the 8K camera and measured the resolution. The results showed that all lenses in this paper had more than 30% of modulation transfer function at 3200TV-lines and 20% at 4320TV-lines (8K nyquist frequency).

We have devised and standardized an interface called "U-SDI (Ultrahigh-definition Signal/Data Interface)" to transmit 8K/4K video with a multichannel audio between 8K production devices. We also developed a 22.2-multichannel -audio embedding device conforming to those standards. The U-SDI makes it easy to connect 8K production devices.

We confirmed the color reproduction accuracy of Super Hi-Vision (SHV) cameras under LED lights. On the basis of our evaluation on color difference between display image captured under standard light and those captured under LED lights, we suggests high Color Rendering Index criterion for the SHV production.

We have been developing a transmission system that uses dual-polarized MIMO and ultra-multilevel OFDM for
8K Super Hi-Vision terrestrial broadcasting. For the carrier modulation scheme, we studied a non-uniform constellation (NUC) to improve the transmission performance and implemented that on a prototype MIMO-OFDM modulator and demodulator. We conducted a field experiment of 8K terrestrial transmission in an urban area and confirmed that the NUC improved the bit error rate compared with a conventional uniform constellation.

We report the development of controlling function of the spatial impression in 3D reverberator as a part of the 22.2 multichannel sound production system for 8K Super Hi-Vision broadcasting service. The subjective experiments were carried out to study the relation between directional reverberation and the spatial impression. On the basis of the result, the controlling method of the spatial impression is proposed and the application software has been installed.

4K/8K systems are expected to take over HDTV. Commercial 4K broadcasting has started and the 8K test broadcasting is planned next year. However it is very difficult to adjust the accurate focus with a small view finder on 4K/8K cameras. Although accurate focus is very important, it is not an easy task to accomplish therefore some of the 4K/8K content can be blurry. Analogue NTSC content is up-converted to HDTV format that is used for HDTV broadcasting even now. The up-converted content does not have sufficient resolution and is burry. Although 4K TV sets are equipped with Super Resolution (SR) technologies to cope with the blurry issues, none of the SR is actually able to fix it. SR algorithm with non-linear signal processing (NLSR) was proposed to fix the issues. NLSR is a simple algorithm and can work in real time for 4K/8K.

A scalable UHDTV video coding system with super-resolution inter-layer prediction is proposed. Real-time processors for the inter-layer prediction are developed based on a preliminary subjective assessment for an appropriate rate allocation for each resolution layer.

In this paper, we propose a method for measuring weights between words in a semantic relation dictionary. Our method can measure weights by using a feature of graph structures. Experiments show the method can achieve an accuracy comparable to a conventional similarity measure.

A prototype system was developed for the automatic estimation of a TV viewer’s interests from video of the viewer. The system extracts keywords that might represent viewer interest topics from closed captions (CC) and from the electronic program guide (EPG). Here we compare weighting measures for use in filtering out irrelevant vocabulary.

We study user interaction patterns in affective image retrieval. Previously, we proposed an interactive system based on yes-no questions for affective image retrieval. We analyze image retrieval process observed in our proposed system. We observed that users spent 87s in average on text-based search, while they spent only 58s in average in our system. This suggests that it was easier for the users to interact with our system than the text-based search.

We have developed a system that can read weather forecasts distributed by the Japan Meteorological Agency and coded in XML format and have animated characters using sign language present them. It automatically generates and updates the sign language animation based on the latest weather forecast it receives through the Internet. Then, We have also studied services using this system.
