    We have been researching a wireless camera system called "Millimeter-wave Mobile Camera", whose performance and functionality match those of cable-connected High Definition Television (HDTV) cameras. HDTV pictures transmission with high-capacity and low delay for main link and HDTV camera control signals transmission with high link reliability for return link are required for the wireless camera. To fulfill these requirements, millimeter-wave (42/55-GHz) band and Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) multiplexing technology enable main link to wirelessly transmit compressed HDTV video at rates of up to 160 [Mbps] with a latency of less than one picture frame. In addition, the millimeter-wave band and Space-Time Block Coding (STBC) technique are also used for return link to realize important camera functions such as highly precise HDTV camera control. This paper describes the feature of the wireless camera system and MIMO technologies for main link and return link, and operation example of the wireless camera in the 61st NHK Red and White Year-End Song Festival.

    In our entertainment VR application, the user can move freely through a virtual city by using a web like SpidermanTM. In this application, the user wears a web shooter, which is a device to shoot webs, and takes aim at a target building. Then, when the user swings his/her arm ahead, a web is launched and it sticks to the target building on the screen. After the web sticks to the building, the user's arm is pulled in the direction of the target building by a pulling force feedback system, which gives the feeling of pulling to the user directly and smoothly, as if he/she were attached to an elastic string. Finally, the user moves to the target building. In three exhibitions, we surveyed the effectiveness of the application by questionnaire. We were able to confirm that a lot of users had enjoyed and were satisfied with our VR application.

    We successfully improved dynamic range characteristics in ultra high-speed CCDs. An equivalent circuit model of an ultra high-speed CCD was analyzed by Using a SPICE simulator to estimate the blunting of the input square wave pulse at the final step of the equivalent circuit. The result of the simulation clarified that the blunting of the input square wave pulse was the main bottleneck causing the drop in saturation signal level dependent on frame rate. A novel ultra high-speed CCD was designed and fabricated and can reduce the blunting of the input square wave pulse. The result of a driving experiment showed a dynamic range of 48.6 dB at one million frames per second, which is equivalent to digital 8 bits and 2.5 times higher than that of the previous ultra high-speed CCD.

    Many parents need child-rearing support not only through face-to-face interaction but also through the Internet as the child's nursing environment changes. However, current web content for child-rearing causes parents to worry unless there is a proper interpretation supplied. Since many parents worry about interpersonal relationships in parenting, child behavior examples lead to a deep-level understanding of the cause of problems. We have constructed a multimodal speech behavior corpus that includes annotated metadata on child behavior in everyday life. In this paper, we propose a method for creating video content based on this corpus. We designed content by using behavior descriptions as a structure. As a result of creating with our method, we found that the corpus structure was useful in content design and that the video content was effective in child-rearing support.

    We are doing research to provide the sense of presence to viewers in dome theaters. A comparison between dome screens and flat screens, quantitative measurements in a current typical dome theater and subjective assessments with a large screen were conducted. First, calculations on image distortions, which are introduced in this paper, show that dome theaters can provide a large screen with fewer distortions than a flat screen. Contrast was measured in a typical large dome theater and it was found that contrast degrades with the projected image size. Lastly, the results of a subjective assessment with a large screen of 450 inches show that luminance and contrast ratio are crucial with large screens.
