We are studying about the digital smart sensor that is integrated with A/D conversion circuit and digital processing circuit. The image sensor can shoot pictures quickly because it can accumulate pixel values, convert analogue data to digital data and process images at the same time.
In this paper, we describe a new method of motion estimation on the A/D conversion image sensor. The A/D conversion is divided into 4 or 8 steps and determines 2 or 1 bit of pixel value at each step. By using this feature of the sensor, the proposed method can estimate correct motion vectors hierarchically.
In this method of A/D conversion, the pixel values that is not finished accumulating throughout are read out without destroying data. Then A/D conversion is done according to priority.
As of now, time intervals are not regularly, but
twicely like (t, 2t, 4t, 8t). Therefore, the number of reference voltage and the scale of circuit were reduced.
With the A/D conversion, motion estimation is executed at the same time. We adopted the hierarchical block matching method as an algorism of motion estimation. As a result, we succeeded in reducing the amount of operations.
With such a method, we make a digital smart sensor experimentally, and now we are evaluating this sensor.
