The vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) excitation spectrum of Zn_2SiO_4・Mn phosphor has such a peculiar characteristic that it keeps almost same efficiency in the much higher energy region than the host absorption edge, i.e., at such a short wavelength as 147nm used for excitation of phosphors in PDP (Plasma Display panel) and rare-gas fluorescent lamps. In order to find the origin of this unusual but preferable property of this phosphor as a VUV-excited phosphor, some phosphors based on zinc oxoacid-salts (Zn_2SiO_4,ZnGa_2O_4,ZnAl_2O_4) activated by Ti, Cr are investigated. It is shown that the unusual property of Zn_2SiO_4・Mn phosphor is rather common to Zn-O based phosphors, indicating an efficient excitation energy transfer among Zn-O atomic groups. Some new VUV-excited phosphors are proposed for the improvement of the color gamut of PDP and rare-gas fluorescent lamps.

To compensate Sr vacancies, divalent transition elements such as Zn and Cd were doped for SrS : Ce thin film electroluminescent (TFEL) devices. By Zn or Cd doping, EL emission spectra sift to blue region. Current spike, which results from a generation of a space charge in the SrS : Ce phosphor layer, is also reduced. However, a conduction charge and the EL luminance is decreased by the Zn or Cd doping. To increase a conduction charge and a luminance, Na doped SrS : Ce TFEL devices having ZnS buffer layers were prepared. The devices show a luminance of 1000 cd/m^2 and EL efficiency of 0.8 lm/W at 1 kHz.

Surface hydrogenation reaction was performed to distinguish the mechanism of the photoalignment using poly (vinyl cinnamate)(PVCi). The reaction makes it possible to remove any surface ordering of cinnamate side groups which may happen during the photoalignment process while the generated photoproducts are still intact. After considering the alignment and the azimuthal anchoring energy of the hydrogenated PVCi/E7 cells, it was found that the alignment of LC molecules is mainly induced by the photoproducts.

It is shown that a polymer network, formed in SmA phase by the photo-cure of UV photo-currable liquid crystalline monomers that are doped in a surface stabilized ferroelecric liquid crystal (SSFLC), eliminates zig-zag defects in SmC^*, since a chevron structure is transformed into a quasi-bookshelf structure by the polymer main chain. In this study, we have observed the electrooptical effect of this polymer stabilized SSFLC (PS-SSFLC) with the aim at exploring the influence of the liquid crystalline polymer network on the alignment structure of FLC molecules. As the experimental results, it is found that liquid crystalline side chains bond strongly with main chain and attract FLC molecules in the rubbing direction. Furthermore, we propose a new PS-SSFLC fabricated by the photo-cure in SmC^* phase.

The experimental investigation has been made for the influences of such parameters as the cell thickness d, the factor d/P_0), the pretilt angle, the wave form of applied voltage, and temperature on the bistability in the BTN (bistable twisted nematic) liquid crystal cell. As the liquid crystal material, the mixture of ZLI-2293 (Merck Co.Ltd.) and CB15 (BDH Co.Ltd.) were used. The initial state of molecular orientation was the anti-symmetric configufactorn with the twisted angle of 180°. The occurrence of bistability was confirmed in the range 0.5 <d/P_0<0.75. The bistability was evaluated by using the memory factor. As a result, it was known that the memory factor is independent of the ratio d/P_0,however, it decreases with the increase of cell thickness d. From the observation with an optical microscope, it was confirmed that the degradation of memory is governed by the movement of the disclination separating the 180° twisted state and the 0° or 360° twisted states. As the temperature was raised, the memory factor was abruptly degraded above a certain temperature at which the d/P_0 ratio is taken out the range 0.5 <d/P_0 <0.75.

The dielectric properties of liquid crystal materials containing an ionic substance are analyzed in terms of space charge polarization. The theoretical equations for the dielectric constant and the dielectric loss factor derived by eliminating a condition that the diffusion distance in a period of the external AC field is much smaller than the thickness of specimen can successfully explain the experimental results for the liquid crystal material 5CB. It is found that the value of diffusion coefficient obtained by the theoretical analysis is significantly close to the value obtained by Time-of-Flight method.
