We have developed a DVD-ROM Drive "GD-2000" and a DVD-RAM Drive "GF-1000". GD-2000 can transfer DVD-ROM data at double speed and can reproduce many kind of disc data, as CD-ROM, CD-R and the others. In addition to these features of GD-2000. GF-1000 has a large recordable capacity of 2.6GB. This paper presents these features of DVD Drives, optical-head and LSI systems.

We have developed a prototype recording system called 'DVD-R' which has incremental writing capability that is one of important functions for DVD-R used to computer peripheral. By using new pre-format information consist of "land pre-pit and wobble" in DVD-R disc, the prototype model realizes very accurate positioning of incremental writing. We have confirmed that the recorded disc can be played back with DVD-ROM drive.

We have developed a low power MPEG1 (Moving Picture Experts Group)/JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) encode/decode single chip LSI (CODEC). On the development of the CODEC, we develogd a new compact motion estimation (ME) process which reduced the number of gates and the power consumption, with keeping good quality of picture. With the new ME process and power management function all over the CODEC chip, We realized low power consumption of the CODEC. Total power consumption of the CODEC is only 500mW. With this chip, we have also realized the first digital camera with MPEG1 stream in the world.

We have develoted the New Generation SVHS Digital Signal Processing System. The new system has been adopted in our VCRs (NV-SB707,NV-SB606) that are already out on the market. In this development, we designed 2 LSI chips, 3rd generation SVHS YC LSI and TBC LSI. The 3rd generation SVHS YC LSI includes all SVHS signal processing, 3DYC, 3DNR, OSD. The TBC LSI has a new algorithm without using PLL clock. As a result, we get the achievement of very low cost and high performance.

IRD built-in VCR has been developed for recording and playing back dish NETWORK digital broadcasts. This VCR system developed on the basis of the data recording "D-VHS" format can record MPEG as bit-stream recording. Meeting the demand of digital age and maintaining along with preserving VHS infrastructure. "D-VHS" format realizes the evolutional expansion of VHS format offering various types of recording applications. This paper describes the "D-VHS" concept, "D-VHS" MPEG format for recording digital broadcasts, and equalizer/decoder.

We have produced new type personal compact digital cameras, Coolpix 100/300. Coolpix 100 is a PC card type digital camera which enables direct data transfer of digital images to a personal computer. Coolpix 300 is a multimedia type digital camera which features image input, aound-recording and handwritten memo input on a built-in LCD. For these cameras we have developed a DSP (digital signal processor) IC. In this paper we describe about a block diagram and futures of these cameras.

We have developed a full color printer TX-7 equipped with a decompression function from a SmartMedia, in which compressed image data are recorded. TX-7 adopted Thermo Autochrome printing method which has advantages of low running cost and photo-like high print quality. Since TX-7 produces prints from the image recorded SmartMedia without using any other equipment ("direct print" feature). it is easy to get prints directly from the digitally recorded images taken with digital cameras, which are rapidly getting popular in personal use. In addition to this feature. TX-7 is also equipped with the standard video equipment interface, personal computer digital interface and image merging function with template images. Owing to these features, wider applications of TX-7,mainly in home use, will be expected. In this paper, outline of TX-7 functions and technologies will be explained.

The LCD projection operates by driving an image per pixel rather than by beam scanning as in the cathode-ray-tube (CRT) system, and it is adopted a progressive scan processing. We developed scanning line converting system which can expand and compress signal in vertical direction. Expansion processing in this system realize "Expansion mode", and compression processing is used for "2-picture display mode"

We have developed a 25-inch flat television with a PALC ( Plasma Addressed Liquid Crystal) display panel which has an aspect ratio of 16 : 9 and 854(H)×480(V) pixels. A tuner is designed as a separate type to realize a flat monitor as well. A motion-adaptive line doubling system was implemented for the current NTSC signal processing with zoom and scrolling function using a frame memory. A HDTV signal (Over-write mode) and a personal computer signal (640×480 mode) can also be displayed.
