The alignment mechanism on the rubbed polymer films has not yet been clearly explained although it is widely used in practice. In this work, we investigate the order parameter of liquid crystal on the surfaces of the rubbed polyimide films by measuring the anisotropy of infrared absorbance using a FT-IR method as a function of a cell thickness. From the results, we clarified that the order parameter of the liquid crystal decreases with approaching to the surface. In addition, the order parameter at the surface was found to be surprisingly low even if the surface is rubbed strongly.

Anchoring strength is an important parameter to fabricate LC devices. The quantitative measurement of surface order parameter is quite important for research on physical properties of liquid crystals alignment and anchoring strength. But we had no suitable method to measure the surface order parameter. Therefore, we propose a new method using phase transition droplet to evaluate the surface order parameter. We also found that the Ar plasma decrease surface order parameter and propose a new model which explain our experimental result.

Memory properties of the liquid crystal alignment are investigated on several polymer films after applying and removing the inhomogeneous electric field. The memory effect of the molecular alignment of reoriented liquid crystals on the polymer films and the frequency dependence of the memory-state are clarified. The memory-states and their changes with the passing of time are discussed on polyvinylalcohol with different degree of polymerization or saponification.

In order to improve microscopic-image display properties of a liquid crystal device, we fabricated a surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal cell with the optical alignment process using polarized deep ultraviolet excimer light with short wavelength. Using the liquid crystal cell with finely-patterned transparent electrodes, the spatial dispersion of threshold voltage for bistable switching became small without microscopic alignment defects, and the high limiting resolution of over 400 line pairs/mm was recognized.

We have proposed a color-sequential fullcolor liquid crystal display without micro-color filter. In this system, an special light source whose color changes in a high speed among red, green and blue sequentially and an OCB-mode liquid crystal cell with wide viewing angle and high speed response. The principle and thedesign rule and the optical characteristics are described.

One polarizer type reflective LCDs are promising to use in reflective color LCDs with high resolution and gray scale and moving image capability. However, in order to apply it to high-quality monitor displays, its contrast ratio is not sufficiently high in wide range of wavelength and viewing angle. In this paper, we discuss the design rule of liquid crystal layer and retardation films for the one polarizer type reflective LCDs to get high quality, especially high contrast ratio, for the monitor displays.

To improve a luminance saturation at high drive frequency, we poposed green emitting phosphor materials with short decay time for AC color plasma display panels. It was showen that the luminance saturation of the red and green practical PDP cells is caused by a long decay time of the phosphors. Green emitting SrAl_2O_4 : Eu^<2+> phosphors were prepared, and their photoluminescent characteristics were measured. The decay time of SrAl_2O_4 : Eu^<2+> is less than 2μs, which is enough short for drivig at 50 kHz. Photoluminescence intensity measured under the excitation at 146 nm is about one half of that of the practical green PDP phosphors. These results indicate that SrAl_2O_4 : Eu^<2+> is expected as efficient green PDP phospor.
