The transmission method for Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting has been proposed to use OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) in Japan. OFDM has robustness against multi path distortions compared with other digital modulation schemes. Nevertheless, 64QAM modulated OFDM signals considerably degrade in the presence of strong multi path distortion. This paper proposes tow methods of soft decision decoding of 64QAM-OFDM. The proposed methods make use of the channel estimation of each OFDM carriers, consequently show powerful performance.

A Terrestrial Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting (ISDB-T) system has been developed for digital terrestrial television and sound broadcasting. An OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) scheme is used to provide robustness against multipath and fading interference. In ISDB-T, a narrow-band OFDM, which has a bandwidth of 432kHz, is used for terrestrial digital sound broadcasting. This paper describes transmission performances of narrow-band OFDM based on laboratory tests using a prototype equipment. A relationship among information bit rate, modulation of OFDM carriers and error coding rate of convolutional code is discussed, and required CN ratio for various parameters under multipath interference conditions is studied.

Development of SFN is a necessary for the introduction of DTTB in Japan. But the coupling disturbance from transmitting antenna to receiving antenna is a severe problem in relay station. For this step, we have made a equipment to measure the coupling. The measuring method which we had developed for this equipment makes it possible to observe a long term behavior of the coupling in addition to continual measurement in a short span. Now, measurement at Tomakomai relay station in Hokkaido have been carried out by the equipment. The data which is including coupling variation in a day suggest that reflection from surroundings should be considered in a design of a coupling canceler.

The xVIII Olympic Winter Games Nagano 1998 commenced on February 7. 1998 centering Nagano City for total of 16 days. resulting with a remarkable success. In this paper, I would like to comment on the comparative features of the Nagano Olympic to the previous Olympics as well as explaining the various duties such as pre- and post- unilateral transmissions unique to the Olympics compared to common sports broadcasting, and finally note the neccesary technical preparations before the Olympic broadcasting began.

For Hi-vision broadcasting, NHK mobilized nine broadcasting vehicles, 100 cameras and 92 VCRs to cover a total of 50 events in seven categories at the 18th Winter Olympic Games at Nagano. This paper reports on triple-speed super slow system, WL cameras, ultra small cameras, VCR integrated cameras, as well as a 1.5Gbps optical multiplex HV transmission system for sending signals between Nagano and Tokyo and a 42-inch HV plasma display system.
