We developed a monochromatic X-ray fast framing camera to observe plasma formation and temperature distribution of a laser fusion plasma. The camera consists of an X-ray imager using toroidally bent crystals and a X-ray fast framing camera, providing temporal(30ps), spatial(10μm), and spectral(20eV)resolutions. Described here are the principle and performance of the camera. Application to other fields is also mentioned.

This Paper presents a signal processing system for newly developed high-resolution digital camera, MX-700. This camera is composed of a 1/2 inch, 1.5M pixels CCD, dual RISC processors, SmartMedia and a digital signal processor LSI. The digital signal processor includes AE/AWB/AF function, high-resolution signal processing, peripherals for the RISC processor, digital encoder, D/A converter and SmartMedia controller. The LSI achieves compact, low power and high-resolution image acquisition system. The image data is recorded on SmartMedia which is small, thin, inexpensive and suitable for the digital camera. The RISC processor includes an internal DRAM and achieves high-speed operation. The outlines and main features of the signal processing system are described

Excimer lasers are expected to be a useful tool for micro-processing of advance electric circuit board etc., because of its ability of short wavelength and short pulse. In these micro-processing, a mask imaging system is generally used. But in the conventional mask imaging system, most of laser power is reflected at the surface of the patterned mask, because of the slight open area ratio of the mask. It causes one of the large barrier to extend the market of an excimer laser for micro-processing. In order to overcome this problem we have developed a new laser machining system with H.O.E. The system is able to increase the mask transmission rate greatly by irradiating the laser power only around the mask open area using a H.O.E. As a result we have succeeded in increasing the net laser power at a work more than 10 times larger compared with conventional system.

A system for the visualization of the surface figure of a stone around the bored hole drilled under ground for the test is experimentally studied using ultrasonic pulse-echo method. The purpose of this paper is focused to visualize the surface of stone of few 10cm diameter in the sand under underground water, which less attenuate the ultrasonic wave than in dry sand. The attenuation in the sand under water was measured for the discussion of penetration of the ultrasonic, and then the transmission through the pipe material of bored hole was also estimated. An example of visualization of the model object was performed to confirm the possibility of this method for near surrounding of the hole.

Liquid Crystal Displays(LCDs)are of features as low power consumption and thin size display. All the more for such features, LCDs have remarkably developed and come into applications as displays used in offices, private homes as well as for outdoors. LCDs have practically become large in their size and their wide viewing angle has been improved on account of various new display modes. Fluorinated LC materials have been evaluated to be most suitable for TFT-LCD use, various fluorinated LC materials have been under development one after another.

Anchoring strength is an important parameter to fabricate LC devices. The surface order parameter is necessary for elucidating the anchoring and the liquid crystal alignment mechanism. But, there left a lot of unclear factors for align liquid crystals, because there is no suitable method to measure the surface order parameter quantitatively. The phase transition droplet method newly proposed in this report that is confirmed to measure the surface order parameter quantitatively. Moreover, an model to explain the decrease of order parameter which is increased by rubbing is proposed and the calculated result is agree well with the experimental value. We also found clarify that the alignment layer with no rubbing also has small order and it decreases by the plasma processing.

The anchoring mechanism at the surface has not been completely clarified, yet. In this work, the relation between order parameter of the alignment and the elastic constant based on the mean field theory was used to analyze the surface anchoring mechanism. The result indicates that the alignment surface affects several nm into the liquid crystal layer where the order parameter is changed and it causes the change of the elastic constant. From this result, S shaped distribution of the director in a twist alignment was deduced. This distribution suggests that the anchoring strength measured until now is the effective anchoring strength. The theoretical analysis was proved firstly by a good agreement between the experimental and calculated results.

An MVA-LCD(multi-domain vertical alignment LCD)that provides super-high image quality has been developed by newly introduced rubbing-less technology. A newly introduced "protrusion" designed on the TFT stbstrates and on the color filter substrates automatically controls the directors of the LC molecules. By this technology we have successively developed four-domain 15"MVA-TFT units that provide extremely wide viewing angle of more than 160 degrees, a high contrast ratio of 300 : 1 or more and a fast response of less than 25ms.

High density recording on a thermally addressable smectic A liquid crystal panel was performed by using an over-write technique. By optimizing the recording conditions, a horizontal spatial resolution as high as 333 line-pairs/mm was obtained at a diffraction efficiency of 1%. When the spatial resolution was less than 62.5 lp/mm, the diffraction efficiency was 18%.

Multicolor fluorescent liquid crystal(LC)displays are proposed using the UV light emitting diode as an excitation source. The fluorescent LC cells are prepared by mixing a cholesteric LC and a blue or green dichroic guest phosphor, and a green or red fluorescent film is stacked on the LC cell. When an applied voltage across the LC cell increases, the light intensity of the fluorescent LC cell decreases and that of the external fluorescent film increases due to the increase of the transmission intensity of the UV light. The multicolor switching is also demonstrated in the triple-layered cell ; two LC layers(blue and green) and one fluorescent film(red).

Excimer laser-annealed polycrystaline silicon(poly-Si) films have been investigated. The uniformity of these films was mainly determined by pulse-to-pulse laser energy fluctuations and beam profiles. The native oxide of a-Si films also influenced the surface roughness of poly-Si films. The fluctuation of crystallinity in the threshold region exerts a strong influence on the TFT characteristics. Because the crystallinity of laser-annealed poly-Si has a narrow threshold energy region, the improvement of the uniformity of the TFT characteristics is needed more exact control of crystallization parameters.

A liquid crystal(LC)grating with a surface relief structure is reported. This liquid crystal grating is fabricated with UV irradiation through a grating photo mask using a mixture of liquid crystal and prepolymer materials. The grating structure of this polymer/LC grating is observed by a polarizing microscope and a scanning electron microscope(SEM), and electrooptical properties are measured. The groove depth which is controlled by the energy of the UV irradiation is also discussed.

In the laser fusion driver, the laser beam propagates through a long distance and passes a lot of optical components. The beam tth sharp edge profile acquires diffraction ripples. These ripples induce the self-focusing in optical components. Thus the intensity nonuniformiy causes the damage of optical components. To overcome this problem, we are investigating the liquid crystal optics to produce a super Gaussian beam with a smooth edge profiles by controlling the polarization. The fabricated serrated apodizing aperture provided a significant improvement of beam quality, and this technology would be quite useful for controlling the beam profile.
