Poly (3-dodecylthiophene)(PAT12) and Poly(3-hexyloxythiophene)(PHOT) were synthesized as conjugated polymer materials for organic EL devices. We investigated the ajustment of HOMO level varied by adding different substitutions. HOMO level of PHOT was higher than PAT12 by 0.6eV because of adding the electron donating alkoxy chain. Because the device utilized PHOT as a emission layer didn't emit, PHOT was unsuitable for EL, material. From the measuremed results of V-I and V-L characteristics of devices which were fabricated by deposition of TPD and Alq3 on conjugated polymer films, it is clarified that PHOT is more effective as hole injecting layer than PAT12 .

Electroluminescent and electrical properties of Cz doped EL devices have been investigated. Charge carrier transport has been discussed in detail on the basis of the current voltage dependence. Luminance of the PVCz : Perylene/PVCz : Cz EL devices increased with the increase of the Cz concentration in a range of 1 to 10mol%. Carrier mobility in PVCz : Cz showed remarkable increase ; from 10^<-7>cm^2/Vs in an undoped PVCz to about 10^<-4>cm^2/Vs in an doped PVCz with a concentration of 23mol%. Double layerd PVCz : Perylene/PVCz : Cz EL devices reproducibly exhibited luminance of more than 500cd/m^2.

Electroluminescent Properties of PVCz based multi-layered EL devices separately doped with Nile Red, Coumarin6 and TPB in successive layers have been investigated. The triple layered structures, i.e., PVCz ; TPB/PVCz ; Nile Red/PVCz ; Coumarin6,have been fabricated by spin coating. EL properties and emission mechanisms together with current transport mechanism have been described. White emitting EL devices have been obtained by considering the dependence of electroluminescent characteristics on the dye concentration in each layer. Design and electroluminescent properties of the white emitting triple layered PVCz EL devices have been described and discussed in relation with the carrier transport in each dye-doped PVCz layer.

High-luminance green-emitting TFEL devices have been fabricated using a Zn_2Si_<1-x>Ge_xO_4 : Mn multicomponent oxide phosphor thin-film emitting layer and a thick ceramic sheet insulating layer. The highest luminance and luminous efficiency, and lowest threshold voltage were obtained in devices using Zn_2Si_<1-x>Ge_xO_4 : Mn thin films prepared with a Ge content of x=0.25,0.3,and 0.5,respectively : luminance of 4220 cd/m^2,luminous efficiency of 2.53 lm/W, and threshold voltage of 50 V, when driven at 1 kHz.

New multicomponent oxide phosphors composed of Ga_2O_3 : Mn and GeO_2 : Mn have been demonstrated as the emitting layer for thin-film electroluminescent (TFEL) devices using a thick BaTiO_3 ceramic sheet insulator. An EL emission was always observed in devices using either an as-deposited or postannealed thin-film emitting layer prepared with all compositions. A luminance of 30 cd/m^2 was obtained in an orange-emitting TFEL device with an as-deposited amorphous (Ga_2O_3-GeO_2) : Mn thin-film emitting layer prepared with a GeO_2 content of 66 mol%. High luminances of 135 and 22 cd/m^2 were obtained in a device using an amorphous (Ga_2O_3-GeO_2) : Mn thin film postannealed at 50O℃ in air and prepared with a GeO_2 content of 66 mol%, when driven at 1 kHz and 60 Hz, respectively.

Structural and luminescent properties of CaS : Cu, F thin films prepared by the electron beam evaporation have been investigated. The film annealed at higher than 750℃ showed [110] orientation and the crystallinty of the film was improved with increasing annealing temperature. The annealed films showed spectra with peaks at 435 to 450 nm and broad emission at longer wavelength at room temperature, and the 435nm emission became dominant by the annealing at temperatures higher than 750℃. It was suggested from the measurement of the time-resolved emission spectra that the blue luminescence of not only the phosphor but also the film is not due to D-A pair recombination but due to the intraionic transition in the Cu^+ion.

ZnO : Zn phosphor thin films have been prepared by laser ablation. The ZnO : Zn thin films are well crystallized, even they are deposited at low substrate temperature of 300℃ without postannealing. The ZnO : Zn films show a strong whitish-green PL emission. It has been found that the concentration of luminescent centers in the films can be controlled by the composition of the source pellet and by the reductive gas pressure in the growth chamber.

The growth of yttrium oxysulfide curopium red phosphor has been studied using sodium thiosulphate as the sulfiding agent employing separated oxides of yttrium and europium. The result indicate that the sulfidation starts at very low temperature ie. 400℃ where the thiosulphate yields sodium polysulfide. The phase pure oxysulfide is obtained at 600℃. the growth of oxysulfide crystal starting from dissolution of oxide and regrown with perfect crystals without mimicking the parent morphology. The phosphor obtained shows efficient luminescence and compared with commercial phosphor.

A phosphor mix of Ba_<0.48>Sr_<O.5>Mg_<O.8>Al_<10>O_<17> : Mn_<2+>(BAM : Mn_<2+>) and of Y_3(Al, Ga)_5O_<12> : Ce^<3+> (YAG : Ce^<3+>) with short decay time is proposed as new green emitting AC plasma display panel (PDP) phosphors. Luminance saturation for driving frequencies above 50 kHz, as well as the aging characteristics of BAM : Mn^<2+> PDP devices are improved by adding YAG : Ce^<3+>. The chromaticity of the PDP panels can be changed by varying the ratio of BAM : Mn^<2+> to YAG : Ce^<3+>. Further improvement of PDP characteristics is expected by other phosphor combinations and by optimization of the mixing ratio.

The positive column observed in glow discharge is an effective discharge structure for improving the luminous efficiency of the PDP. In order to reduce the discharge voltage of the positive column DC discharge cell, we investigated the discharge characteristics using a Y_2O_3 cathode made by EB deposition on the thin-film Al cathode. The discharge voltage was 100V lower than that of the thick-film Al cathode. The cell structure was used for a color DC PDP with a reflective-type phosphor screen, and the panel had a luminous efficiency of 0.8lm/w.

When moving images are displayed on PDPs, disturbances of gray levels and colors are often observed. Although the motion-dependent equalizing-pulse technique is an effective one for reducing the gray scale disturbances, the technique is inapplicable to some patterns which cause errors in the speed detection. The error can be eliminated by the use of a follow-left method, which determines the light-emission pattern of the pixel by following the pattern of the pixel on the left. The disturbances can be reduced to less than 1% of the original signal by the motion-dependent equalizing-pulse technique combined with the follow-left technique.

An improved "Address-while-Display" drive technique is introduced for 3-electrode, surface-discharge AC-PDPs. Both positive and negative display pulses are applied to display electrodes. Scan pulses, preerase pulses, and erase pulses are applied to address-display electrodes. By doing this, large capacity HV drivers become only necessary for the common display electrodes. A newly-introduced pre-erase pulse reduces the scan pulse voltage, and also light-emission duty is increased to l00%. By using the techniques, 8-bit HDTV images were displayed, with a white peak luminance of 840 cd/m^2.
