Optical communications, optical information processings and optical memories using coherent optics generated from lasers are repidly developped and optical systems using bulk optical circuits, bulk optical components and optical fibers are used for these information systems. As optical integrated devices of integrated optics, mostly semiconductor lasers and optical detectors are well applied. However, optical integrated devices and circuits have not been accomplished for practical application, except external optical modulators. Particularly, connection technologies for optical fibers and integrated circuits must be well developped for practical systems. The author has studied fiber type and single integrated type connectors and investigated those connection and transformation characteristics. In this paper, electromagnetic eigen characteristics of now type optical multi-fiber bundles and optical couplers consisting of multi waveguides with cross section parts of circular ring sections are discussed, as mathematical boundary problems. Rigorous boundary problems of electromagnetic fields are shown, and technical applications of optical couplers consisting multi-waveguides with circular ring sections, are discussed

An optical waveguide amplifier based on Er-doped Garnet crystals is proposed, and steady-state transient amplification characteristics, studied numerically using time-dependent rate equaations are presented. The dynamics and spectral characteristics of the waveguid medium and optical waves play important role in the ultrashort pulse propagation. Experimentally determined spectroscopic characteristics are used in the dynamic response analysis. Understanding the dynamic characteristics of the integrated optic waveguide amplifiers is necessary when the input signal is modulated in various formats. Approximate numerical calculation have been carried out on the short pulse amplification.

This report describes a study on a tunable Fabry-Perot optical-waveguide filter fabricated on LiNbO_3 substrate. We investigated the relation between the effective indices of the fundamental mode and the insertion loss when the absolute value of negative applied-voltage increased. With various waveguide widths, the effective indices of fundamental mode were calculated by the computer simulation. The simulation result says that the absolute value of negative voltage with the fundamental mode becoming cut-off increases as the waveguide is wider. The experimental result showed that the fluctuation of insertion loss was suppressed under 0.8 dB at 14um of the waveguide width.

In wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) transmission, transmission characteristics are remarkably degraded by nonlinear effects such as cross-phase modulation(XPM) and four-wave mixing(FWM). In this paper, we have demonstrated a possibility of the timing jitter compensation induced by the XPM. It can be achieved by using an OPC in the midway of dispersion flat transmission line consisted of dispersion shifted fibers(DSF)and dispersion slope compensation fibers(DSCF).

The Performance of future generation computing systems will be limited by electrical interconnections, and thus many optical interconnection technologies are proposed to solve this problem. We have proposed optical sheet bus technology which use diffusion controlled light in the stacked planar waveguides that makes capability of broadcasting, synchronous multi-channel transmission and simultaneous bi-directional transmission with easy alignment. Fabricating the transmission system using optical sheet bus technology, data rates of 500Mbps with bit-error rates smaller than 10^<-11> were achieved with received optical power of -20.5dBm. We found that optical sheet bus technology can be applied to the inter-board and intra-board bus. such as the bus between CPUs and memories and the backplane bus.

We have proposed multi-level multi-accessible transmission using optical sheet bus technology which propagate diffusion controlled light in the planer optical waveguide. The optical signals which have a different intensity from two signal ports are added in the sheet and the multiplex transmission of 2×250Mbps is confirmed. The following relations are theoretically showed, multiplex level and received optical power uniformity ; multiplex level and crosstalk caused by reflection light from the opposite side under simultaneous bi-directional transmission ; crosstalk and Bit Error Rate. Result of bi-directional transmission at multiplex level of two corresponded to the calculation. Based on required transmission quality, multi-level multi-accessible bi-directional trnsmission system could be designed.

With the diffusion of the Internet and the enterprise intranet, time-critical and mission-critical applications are being used more oftem in IP networks in addition non-real-time applications such as e-mail. QoS schemes to control the bandwidth and transmission delay time are required to support such applications. New networks whose rate is dynamically controllable and easy control by users are desired. Access network systems that can provide temporal or virtual IP leased circuits to users have been studied. New system architectures based on ATM-PDS and carrier-shared access systems that achieve dynamic and unified control of the bandwidth are proposed.

WDM technologies are applied to the long-distance communication network. Cost effectiveness is more important for applying this WDM technologies to communication network in small area. It's proposed to replace costly WDM multiplexer and demultiplexer with a cheap star coupler which is made with 3dB couplers. Optical receiver which is provided with optical BPF is newly designed, in order to choose one wavelength out of multiple input wavelengths. Besides, in order to make compensation for the transmission loss in transmission pass, low-gain erbium-doped fiber amplifier is developed. Assembling these modules, point-to-point system is built and evaluated. As a result of this evaluation, it is confirmed that this simplified optical transmission system in small area can be realized.

Optical mode conversion induced by magnetostatic surface waves(MSSW)is promising for wide bandwidth optical signal processing at microwave signal frequencies. A multilayered garnet device structure to obtain efficient optical-MSSW interaction in a three-dimensional optical waveguide is proposed and analzed. The optical mode conversion characteristics between the E^z_<pq> and the E^x_<pq> modes supported by the threedimensional optical waveguide are derived. The dependence of the mode coupling coefficient on the waveguide parameters, such as the film thicknesses, wavegtuide width, saturation magnetization, and the MSSW power is also analyzed to enable optimization of device parameters.

Near-field microprobe and optical microscope is a new type of measurement and microscope using evanescent field. Observation of materials with high resolution below optical wave length. In near-field probe and optical microscope, power of scattered light is neasured by scattering evanescent light on the material using tapered probe. Then the surface of the material is characterized from the relation between power and the position of the probe. Relation depends on the diameter of the top end of the probe. So the probe is one of most important parts in near-field optical measurement and microscope. This is a study on light propagation of near-field probe. We used Beam Propagation Method(BPM)to simulate the propagation. By successfully making a program for BPM, we could find out the basic characteristics of optical propagation in prove.

For WDM/SCM systems using direct modulation, we evaluated the required performances of key optical devices ; laser diodes(LDs), opeical filters, and EDFAs. Focusing on chirping of LDs, we clarified the method to decide the required values of FWHM of optical filters and RIN of EDFAs. In the case of the 32WDM/310ch-SCM system, it is needed that RIN of EDFAs is less than 136.5dB/Hz, and FWHM of optical filters is between 0.35nm and 0.65nm, when the product of FM efficiency and difference between bias current and threshold current of a LD is less than 10GHz. Developed key optical deveces satisfied all their requirements.
