We introduce compounds having properties of regulating light in both active and passive ways. We specially explain our recent results on new type of non-polymeric cholesteric liquid crystals with a relatively high molecular weight. The liquid crystals present solid films with stable iridescent colors that can be controlled by the exprienced thermal history or the photo reaction of a doped compound. Furthermore, it is possible to fix several different colors on a sheet of film that consists of a single type of molecule. The fixed colors are disappeared above 130℃. And new colors are fixed again after erasing. The liquid crystals with these properties have a potential for a rewritable full-color recording material.

A new toner display device using the conductive toner and charge transport layer has been investigated. In this new system, the toner movement is controlled by electric field between two transparent electrodes. Two plates with charge transport thin layer, CTL, are placed opposing each other, leaving a certain distance in between by using spacer. The conductive toners on the CTL were charged by the hole injection from CTL to toner particles, and move to the front electrode. The toner particles are fixed on the front electrode due to the coulombic force between the toner and electrode across the CTL. The toner particles can be removed by applying reverse electric field. The image can be recorded and erased easily by switching of electric field polarity.

With the spread of mobile devices and consideration of environment, non-emissive or reflective displays reducing the power consumption have attracted attention. Their picture quality should be close to white paper and color printed matter. However, it is difficult to reproduce paper like white by the conventional reflective liquid crystal displays (LCD's). This is because light absorption by the polarizer or the dyes in the LCD's reduces their reflectivity. In this presentation, Actuated Film Display(AFD) which reproduce paper like white and full color will be proposed. Cyan, magenta and yellow films are mechanically actuated on white films by electrostatic force in this display, therefore picture quality can be close to the printed matter.

The need to output digital images on paper is increasing as the use of networks becomes popular. An ion-flow method is suitable for printing high-quality images because it can generate multi-scale dots. However, because of the methhod's low ion efficiency, it is difficult to attain fast print speed. Moreover the quality of the images becomes relatively low if the so-called closstalk of ions happened. In this study, the influence of diameter of aperture on ion-flow controllability is investigated. It is shown that ion efficiency can be optimized at a diameter 1.5-2.0 times as a dot zize. Also, the effect of a multiple aperture matrix on image quality is examined and it is shown that a stagger matrix provides the highest image quality.

In cross media color reproduction, Color Management System based on basic colorimetry doesn't perform well when original image and reproduced image are observed in different viewing condition. Color Appearance Model which can predict perceived color observed in various viewing conditions recently attract attention as a solution for such a problem. Visual experiments were performed comparing Color Management Systems for CRT and Print using some kinds of Color Appearance Models. And some problems to be solved are reported.

Some key issues of picture quality on transparent LCD and reflective LCD related to ambient light condition are discussed. The paper describes a modeling of color for the transparent LCD, and illustrates how problem of picture quality was reduced in office environment. Also the needs to consider color constancy and color adaptation is explored for reflective LCD. Results from subjective opinion test on color appearance matching under different light sources are presented.
