The automatic tracking of the doubtful movement is proposed to support the security agent. The automatic tracking function is realized by the motion vector detection and the electronic zoom. Additionally, the luminance flicker and the color flicker reduction algorithms, the long-time exposure function, and the digital noise reduction(DNR)for CCD raw signals are proposed. As realizing these digital image processing technologies, we have developed a new LSI for the high-grade surveillance camera system. This LSI contains processing circuits not only for these new functions but for all CCD color cameras with the exception of a V-drive IC for driving the CCD and a pre-process IC(CDS/AGC/ADC-IC). This LSI realizes the small-sized surveillance camera with superior functions and high perfornance.

This paper presents efficient and automatic color and motion feature extraction algorithm for content-based MPEG-1 video retrieval. Based on the proposed method, a video retrieval system is implemented. For color feature, the proposed algorithm considers dynamic color information in video data, and thereby can overcome the limits of the previous key-frame based method. For motion feature, we utilize the motion vector in MPEG-1 video with color information, and extract the color-motion feature. The proposed algorithm can solve the weakness of the previous location based motion feature method. Finally, the proposed method is evaluated within the implemented video retrieval system.

As the amount of multimedia data increases rapidly, many techniques have been developed to efficiently manage multimedia databases. Especially, active researches have focused on fast image indexing and retrieval in image databases because of its abundant applications. This paper presents a new search algorithm for fast image retrieval, which is based on a clustering scheme and a multi-resolution data structure. The proposed algorithm consists of three steps; clustering of a database, selection of several reliable clusters, and fast search within the selected clusters. As a feature, the algorithm adopts luminance histograms with a multi-resolution data structure. By using these multi-resolution histograms, we can dramatically reduce the total computational complexity. Intensive simulation results support that the proposed scheme provides faster searching ability and near-optimal searching accuracy.

This paper presents a computer-aided diagnosis system for breast tumor by using three-dimensional ultrasonic images. The system consists of three parts. The first part is to reconstruct a volumetric ultrasonic image data using both the echographic image slices, obtained by commercial ultrasonic echography device, and the probe's position and orientation data tracked by a magnetic position sensor. In the second part, breast tumor regions are automatically extracted by using fuzzy reasoning techniques. Finally, breast tumors are quantitatively evaluated based on some parameters by using fuzzy reasoning in order to differentiate malignant tumors from benign tumors. So far, the system has been applied to over 100 cases of clinical breast tumor data, and the results show excellent agreement with those of fine needle aspiration cytology. It is concluded that this system has the potential for greatly increasing the accuracy and efficiency of breast cancer examination.

Video segmentation is an important step in many video processing applications. By observing that the video shot boundary is a multi-(temporal)-resolution edge phenomenon in the feature space, we develop a general framework to handle all types of transitions in a consistent manner. We employ the Wavelet technique to transform the video signals into their first order derivatives in the frequency domain, and utilize this information across multiple temporal resolutions to detect, classify, and locate both the CUT and GT transitions. We test our method using the MPEG7 video data set consisting of about 13 hours of video. The results demonstrate that our framework is effective, and it possesses good noise tolerance characteristics. As part of this work, we are proposing the use of MPEG7 data set together with the ground truth data as the standard test set for video segmentation research.

Texture as an image contents is fundamental descriptor to represent an image. In this paper, we propose a texture featuring technique and a texture descriptor based on human visual system(HVS). Psychophysical experiments have shown that the response of visual cortex is turned to a band-limited portion of the frequency domain. It gives evidence that the brain decomposes the spectra into perceptual channels that are bands in spatial frequency. As far as spatial vision is concerned, best-adopted sub-band representation of HVS is a division of spatial frequency domain with octave-band division in radial axis and equal-width division in orientation axis(or angular axis). In this paper, we describe the texture in Radon space that is believed to fit HVS.

In a 3-D model based vision method, aspect identifier matrices can decide feature correspondences between 3-D models and an observed image by simple linear operations. This paper proposes new identifier matrices which significantly reduce aspect misidentification rate by linear(especially orthogonal)transforms. The transforms are derived from generalized eigenvalue problems. Performance of the new identifier matrices is compared with that of conventional ones. Numerical simulations on synthetic images of a pentagonal prism show that the proposed matrices reduce misidentification rate which is caused from nonlinear perspective distortion of camera.

This paper proposes a new subband coding approach to compression of document images, which is based on nonlinear binary subband decomposition followed by concatenated arithmetic coding. We choose to use the sampling-XOR(Exclusive OR)subband decomposition to exploit its beneficial characteristics to conserve the alphabet size of symbols and to provide a small region of support while providing the perfect reconstruction property. We propose a concatenated arithmetic coding scheme to alleviate the degradation of predictability caused by subband decomposition, where three highpass subband coefficients at the same location are concatenated and then encoded by an octave arithmetic coder. A appropriate context and a new symbol unicolor map, improve the performance of compression more. Simulation results show that each of the functional blocks proposed in the paper performs very well and consequently the proposed subband coder provides very good compression of document images.

This paper briefly introduces Korea's broadcasting digitalization of major broadcasting media. Satellite broadcasting in Korea has been already in service on Koreasat with MPEG-2 MP@ML digital format from 1996. And 4 channels of SDTV programs are on the air until now. Introduction of terrestrial digital TV broadcasting in Korea is decided to commence in the year 2001. To prepare for the regular service, experimental broadcasting has already started in the late 1999. And test broadcasting will begin in 2000. Digital cable TV is not yet under preparation due to the extremely low penetration of analog CATV. But it is under discussion and expected to be planned in the year 2000. ETRI will start the preparation for the introduction of digital CATV in 2000. Most of the current problems in broadcasting belong to each country, however, the experiences could be referenced among the countries. But future new media like DAB, multimedia broadcasting and 3DTV could be a fruitful topic for international collaboration

Due to the temporal correlation of the image sequence, the motion vector of a block is highly related to the motion vector of the same coordinate block in the previous image frame. If we can obtain useful and enough information from the motion vector of the same coordinate block of the previous image frame, the total number of search points used to find the motion vector of the current block may be reduced significantly. Using that idea, an effcient predicted direction search algorithm(PDSA)for block matching motion estimation is proposed in this paper. The proposed method utilizes the predicted direction which is obtained from the motion vector of the same coordinate block of the previous frame to obtain a prediction motion vector, namely the initial search point. Computer simulation results show that the proposed search algorithm gives better prediction performance than the other fast search algorithms, such as 3SS, 4SS, UCBDS, and PSA, in terms of both subjective quality and PSNR value.

This paper presents a new DCT-based embedded significance tree image sequence coding for progressive image transmission. In order to maintain compatibility with the conventional standardized algorithms and achieve an improvement of coding efficiency at very low bit rate, the MC/DCT hybrid image coding structure is fully utilized. Rearranging the DCT transformed coefficients into significance tree structure, and using the embedded zerotree quantizer, a new image sequence coder can be built, from which we can achieve an excellent coding performance for progressive image sequence transmission and precise user-specified rate control. In the tentative simulations, the proposed new image coder can show better ratedistortion performances than wavelet-based one

We propose an extraction method of character string region included in a natural scene image. In this method, an input scene image is divided into several binary images. Hough transform is applied to each binary image and candidate rectangle regions are extracted. Character string region is finally determined by accumulating such candidates which exist in each binary image. This method shows that about 98% of target regions are correctly extracted as an experimental result.

The rapid expansion of multimedia techniques has made stereo display systems more prevalent than ever. Due to the insufficiency of stereo sources, we propose a framework for generating visual stereo image pairs based on the common 2D images. The framework consists of two parts: rendering method by exploiting the pseudo 3D structure and synthesis method by exploiting the motion information between image frames. The tentative experimental results illustrates that these approaches can help viewer to perceive and understand the three-dimensionality of the world.

Information about camera operation such as zooming, focusing, panning, tilting and dollying is useful not only for efficient video coding, but also for detection of moving objects in the scene. We have developed a camera operation parameter measurement system and applied it to inferring the camera-induced image motion directly from pan/tilt/zoom parameters. However, when the camera is undergoing translational movement such as dollying, the camera-induced 2D motion depends both on the camera operation parameters and the depth of each point in the scene. In this paper, we propose a multiframe image matching algorithm for robust depth-map estimation. The algorithm exploits camera operation parameters to establish point correspondence among multiple image frames. The experimental results show significant improvement in the accuracy of depth-map compared with the conventional two-frame matching method.

The authors have already proposed a data embedding method based on the phase modulation of sampling lattice. Considering the diversity of the image information, the trade-off property between the robustness of the embedded data and the image quality is desired to be closely controllable. In our method, the degradation of image quality is minimal even when additional data can be embedded. Also, the trade-off property above-mentioned can easily and continuously be controlled with a single parameter. Furthermore, since the original image is required as a reference signal for decoding, decoding and falsifying the additional information by a third party is made very difficult by concealing the original image. This paper discusses the decoding error rate for still image for the three kinds of the encoding signal processing methods used in our method. As a result, we conclude that the band-limited interpolation and cubic spline interpolation give better performance, compared with the bi-linear interpolation.

The method to binarize a gray-scaled image by local thresholds in separated image areas is useful when the image has uneven brightness. However, many binary noises often occur in local image areas with even brightness. This paper proposes a method to separate a gray-scaled image dynamically for local thresholding to generate a binary image using a genetic algorithm. The experimental results show that the binarized images by the proposed method included less noise and blur than the binalized images by the conventional method that separates a gray-scaled image equally. Also, the method that the number of separated local areas is variable depending on the objective gray-scaled images generated the binary images with fewer noises than the method that the number of local areas is constant.

When we see a binary black and white image, it appears, to our visual sense, to become clearer because of a pseudo halftone. We presented a theory and experimental results for layered model which extended external world, retina and brain of the one dimensional visual model, the equivalence approximation method of two dimension based on one dimensional visual model. We obtain experimentally the restored images, the measure of approximation of density four division method, ordered dither method, random dither method and least mean error method. The measure of approximation presents the objective estimation scale to coincide with the subjective estimation of the four modulation images by the equivalence approximation method. We presents the image estimation method which is no significant difference between its method and two dimensional model. Generally, we believe the measure of approximation is effective the arbitrary two value modulation images.

In this work, computer graphics(CG)images were displayed using holographic stereograms(HSs). Since the HS is synthesized using many sequential two-dimensional(2D)images, three-dimensional CG images which have a stereoscopic effect can be obtained by recording CG images onto holographic film. In this paper, a method based on OpenGL, which is a widely used graphics library, is proposed to create sequential perspective 2D images for HS synthesis. In addition, the results of image reconstrucdon from the synthesized HSs are presented.
