A novel drive architecture coined"multimode hard disc drive" is capable of ultra-high speed data transfer, low power consumption, AV/data partitioning among others by enabling a manifold of R/W operation modes of different level of performance within a single drive. This paper addresses three most fundamental mechanical issues related to the multimode HDD, namely, 1)velocity-insensitive flying head technology, 2)ratevariable spindle motor, and 3) disc dynamics, showing in principle that it is indeed a working drive architecture with high potentiality for AV/IT applications.
