In order to simply realize sound image localization, a method using IIR filters which approximate head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) was proposed previously. However the nonlinear phase characteristics of the IIR filters cause decrease of the localization accuracy. In this paper, we investigate the influence of the phase characteristics on the sound localizatiion. First, we carried out sound image localization experiment using the HRTFs approximated by IIR filters. Next, the experimental errors of directional localization were compared with the theoretical values caluculated from the phase characteristics. As the results, the errors are almost similar to the theoretical values.
Recently, information technology has progressed remarkably. It is necessary that children learn in school how to put information to practical use. They need to learn the ability to select necessary information from unnecessary information and to send information by themselves. In this study, an inquiry about information education was performed in primary schools and junior high schools in Tochigi Prefecture. Based on the results, we made teaching materials using multi-media contents for home economics and we have been using them in classes and obtaining satisfactory results.

This paper addresses the use of an electronic mail system called picture-mail, that is able to transmit signing motion pictures. Deaf people are required to use written Japanese when they utilise ordinary telecommunication and information services in daily life. We discuss certain issues that make picture-mail system really beneficial for deaf people in communication through signed language.We also point out issues to be considered further in providing really usable system for users including deaf people.
It is an important problem in multimedia information processing to reproduce colors between different media. We made color stimuli of self-luminous mode and surface-color mode with CRT and color charts, and then, measured the color appearance with psychophysical experiments. The results showed that the similarity in the same color mode is higher than that in the same color media (CRT and color charts). It showes that color appearance mode has influences to human color appearance.
This paper proposes subjective perspective transformation for sophisticated human-interface technology, which is well adapted to the individual nature of human visual sensation. The result of an experiment on observers' binocular visile induced images shows the necessity of a certain perceptive transformation. A modification rule of size of observed objects in the form of the modification function ψ(r)is introduced as the perceptive transformation. Experimental comparison between a modified (partially expanded) perspective drawing with one vanishing point on a screen by the perceptive transformation and observer's induced image by binocular visile shows the validity and usefulness of proposed perceptive transformation.
In the textile and apparel industry, image analysis has been used in order to evaluate the texture of the fabrics e.g., the perch. Almost all of the texture evaluation by the image analysis have been carried out by analyzing observed only one image. The human evaluates the texture of the fabric in various observation bring the fabric close to the face and keeping the fabric away from the face. Because the fabric texture shows the special model by the viewpoints. It is necessary that features of the fabric texture are obtained from multiple images of the fabric texture in order to construct the automatic eveluation system of fabric texture which reflects the impression for the fabrics of human. We make a mathematical model for geometrical characteristics that are obtained from the multiple image of the fabric texture, with the aid of well-known fractal theory. Availability of this model is numerically checked by categorizing the real data by the categorizing algorithm with the well-known maximum likelihood method. 50 real data were rightly classified.
This paper describes a method that extracts text regions from scenery images taken by digital camera. Many methods have been proposed for extraction of text regions from images. Most of them use a specific feature such as edge feature, color feature and so on. They, therfore, employ many conditions for extraction and it is also difficult to assign these parameters. This paper proposes an extraction method of text regions, which employs simple conditions, by using two kinds of features. One of them is edge feature which reflects local aspect of an image in image domain. Closed edges in an edge image are utilized for the extraction. The other feature is color distribution which reflects global aspect. Color clustering is employed for segmentation of images. In each feature image, candidates of character regions are selected based on relative geometric data among regions. Common regions of the selected one are extracted as character regions. Finally, these extracted regions are reconstructed as test regions. At the end of this paper, extracted text images from several scenery images and results of character recognition using a commercial software are shown.
