Coupled granular/continuous media, or CGC media, was fabricated by depositing CoPt multiplayer on CoCrPt granular layer in association with a soft magnetic underlayer. The Co/Pt multilayer has a strong in-plain exchange coupling, which is coupled to the granular layer. Using these CGC media read/write characteristics was investigated by using a single pole writing head and a GMR reader. Clear output increase due to improvement of squareness ratio of its hysteresis loop was observed. Comparing with a granular medium, thermal demagnetization was remarkable improved. In addition to them, transition jitter that is an issue of double layer perpendicular media was reduced. The D_<50> was higher than that of the granular media, which means improvement of writing resolution.

We analyzed the write process considering temperature and write frequency to determine the difference from the conventional self-consistent analysis. The extended Neel-Arrhenius type model with two different time constants for high and low energy barrier can approximate the coercive field versus frequency of hysteresis loop calculated by the method of Langevin equation. As the linear density becomes higher, the transition parameter becomes smaller and the amplitude of written pattern becomes larger compared to the superposition of the isolated transition.

Read/Write characteristics of CoCrPtTa and [Co/Pd]_n single layer perpendicular magnetic recording media with carbon underlayers were investigated. The coercivity increased and the α(=4π(dM/dH)_<H=HC>) value decreased with an increase in the carbon underlayer thickness for both media. The media with a low α value, suggesting a decrease in the exchange coupling, exhibited the improvement in the S/N ratio. The lower α value and the finer magnetic cluster size lead to the higher S/N ratio of Co/Pd media in read-write experiment. Ring type head / [Co/Pd]_n perpendicular magnetic recording media system can be one of promising candidate by using high B_s head to improve the recording property of Co/Pd media with low α value.

Thermal stability and media noise performance of the CoPrTb/CoCrTa composite perpendicular media having CoZrNb soft back-layers are discussed. The composite media show higher recording sensitivity and better roll-off performance compared to those of individual CoCrTa or CoPrTb media. The D_<50> value of CoPrTb(10nm)/CoCrTa(20nm) composite medium is about 50 kFRPI higher, and the S/N value was about 10 dB higher (at 300 kFRPI), compared to those of the CoCrTa(30nm) medium. The composite medium shows very high thermal stability of read back signals even at low recording density, although the value of loop squareness M_r/M_s is smaller than 0.9. The CoPrTb layer is assumed to prevent the thermal reversal of individual grains of the CoCrTa layer by the interfacial exchange coupling, resulting in high thermal stability.

A parallel concatenated parity check coding system, the decoding complexity of which is smaller than that of the conventional turbo coding system with the recursive systematic convolutional(RSC) codes, is proposed and the performance is evaluated. First, a construction method of encoding and decoding is shown. Then, the required SNR's to achieve a BER of 10^<-4> for the combinations of the coding rates 16/18 and 32/34 parallel concatenated codes and the parity check coded E^2PR4 systems are obtained by computer simulation. Lastly, their performances are compared with that of the conventional 16/17(0, 6/6) coded E^2PR4ML system. It is shown that the proposed system provides the better performance than the conventional system.
