Micro-groove substrate(MG)using a ruling engine was evaluated geometrically and optically. As the result, it was confirmed that the MG substrate had periodic structure. Uniform molecular alignment is observed partially. Precise control of the ruling engine promises uniform molecular alignment of LCDs.

Areflective color LCD of high quality, low power consumption, light weight and thin structure is an important device for highly portable information terminals. In this report, we numerically analyzed the relationship between the electro-optical properties and the driving voltage in a single-polarizer reflective DTN-LCD with a quarter-wave plate. We found that the LCD exhibits an achromatic image of high luminous reflectance and high contrast ratio, even if the on-voltage of TFT-LCD is reduced to 2V, the power consumption can thus be decreased to about 1/6 to 1/7 of that of a current reflective TFT-LCD of 5V at on-state.

In this report, we numerically analyzed the relationship between the electro-optical properties and the driving voltage in a single-polarizer reflective DTN-LCD with a retardation film in order to confirm the possibility to reduced power consumption. We found that the LCD exhibits an achromatic image of high luminous reflectance and high contrast ratio, even if the on-voltage of TFT-LCD is reduced to 2V, the power consumption can thus be decreased to about 1/6 to 1/7 of that of a conventional reflective TFT-LCD of 5V at on-state.

We have studied the relationship between bent smectic layers of ferroelectric liquid crystal(FLC)stabilized by polymer fibers and molecular-alignment bistability, and realized the memory effect of the FLC by controlling the smectic layer structure. In forming the aligned polymer fibers with photopolymerization-induced phase separation, high pretilt alignment layers were used, so that the bending direction of FLC alignment was uniformed in cross-sectional plane. When the phase of FLC materials was changed from smectic A to smectic C^*, we applied acvoltage to the formed FLC/polymer composite film to stabilize cone axis of the FLC switching in rubbing direction. The bending of smectic layers in device plane was reduced, and the uniform layer structure allowed the memory effect of the device. The memory function accompanied the grayscale capability because of spatial distribution of bistable FLC domains with various threshold voltages.

We have developed a novel display method for field sequential color LCD without color break up, which we call Adjustment of Color Element on the Eyes(ACE). In this method, the RGB color sub-images of motional image dispose on the eyes.

Electro-holography is expected as 3D-TV. It can reconstruct true 3-D image including the focal depth what is very important for natural 3-D image observation. It is very important to improve the characteristics of elctro-holographic-display-systems. In this paper, we will discussion about characteristics improvement of reconstructed image in the case of white light reconstruction by optimizing technique, and we will show that make it possible to reappear brightness of reconstructed-images.

We have studied luminescent properties of CaMgSi_2O_6:Eu^<2+>(CMS:Eu^<2+>)showing a blue emission as a new phosphor for vacuum-ultraviolet excitation. PL emission intensity of CMS:Eu^<2+> under 147 nm excitation increases as source SiO_2 content increases. The peak intensity of CMS:Eu^<2+> reaches about 74% of that of BaMgAl_<10>O_<17>:Eu^<2+>(BAM:Eu^<2+>)for 147 nm excitation. The synthesized CMS:Eu^<2+> phosphor shows a good stability of luminescence intensity in comparison with BAM:Eu^<2+> for baking in air at 600℃ for 1 hour. The initial luminance of prepared CMS:Eu^<2+> test panel is about 56% of that of BAM:Eu^<2+>. The peak intensity of luminescence spectrum of CMS:Eu^<2+> test panel is comparable compared with that of BAM:Eu^<2+>.

Blue emitting Eu^<2+> doped CaAl_2O_4 phosphor thin films were obtained by pulsed laser deposition technique and post-annealing. As-grown films were amorphos and showed weak red photoluminescence(PL)due to the trivalent Eu ion. By annealing in reducing atmosphere(N_2/H_2:2% mixed gas)at 950℃ for 3 hours, the film was crystalized and showed the PL emission band peaking at about 447nm, which is originated from the 4f^65d to 4f^7 transiton of the divalent Eu ion.
