In order to attain high-rate deposition of MnZn ferrite thin films for back-layers in perpendicular magnetic recording media, a reactive sputtering using powder-metal targets under the mixture gas of Ar and O_2 was performed. Study of discharge voltage-current characteristics and annealing effects clarified that the oxidization condition at the film surface is strongly related to the oxidation at the targets' surface. The oxidation condition of the targets can be estimated by monitoring the discharge voltage. It was succeeded that MnZn ferrite films with(111)crystal orientation were deposited on Pt(111)underlayer. The film revealed 3.4kG of 4πM_s, 70Oe of coercivity. The deposition rate of the new method is 16 times as high as that of the conventional method.

Preparation of(Fe-Pt)-Oxide composite films was studied, aiming at reducing a domain size of Fe-Pt double-layered media. It was found that a new(Fe-Pt)-MgO composite film exhibited a lower formation temperature of ordered phase than that for composite films with other additives such as Al_2O_3 and SiO_2 A domain size of the (Fe-Pt)-MgO film was smaller than that of a pure Fe-Pt film. A high density recorded pattern of 700 kFRPI was observed for the(Fe-Pt)-MgO double-layered medium. TEM observations for the(Fe-Pt)-MgO composite film suggest epitaxial relationship between the Fe-Pt grain and the MgO grain in the film lateral direction. The(Fe-Pt)-SiO_2 film was constructed with a nano-granular structure consisting of the(001)oriented Fe-Pt grains separated by channels of amorphous SiO_2 phase.

A modeling for PR channel in a perpendicular magnetic recording using AR model is studied. The AR model is constructed from the actual channel outputs obtained by a read/write experiment using a spinstand. The signal and noise spectra, the distributions of signal level, the error rate performances, and the error patterns for PR channel model are obtained. The results show that the characteristics agree well with those of the actual channel. It is also shown that a model of read/write channel is obtained by adding the reverse characteristic of equalizer to PR channel model.

Performance improvement of an APP decoder in a serially concatenated turbo coding and decoding system is studied in perpendicular magnetic recording. An estimator of output levels from a PR channel in APP decoder is improved, and BER performance is obtained by computer simulation. The results show that the performance is improved. It is also clarified that the performance improvement is obtained by extension of coding and decoding block size.

We have to estimate the total performance through a write and read process. Therefore, we have developed the phase change simulator integrated the simulator of thermal and phase shange phenomena, and the simulator of read process. In this paper, we will focus the method to control a shape of mark that is suitable for signal processing among many functions of our simulator

We studied about storage management system that content provider can directly control the storage system in a home. We developed the structure of metadata to store content and to play back content by intention of content provider, and the structure of software to receive this metadata. Also, this system can realize service that shows content according to a viewer's preferences and content related to program being watched.
