In this paper, the rhombic loop antenna loaded by a short-circuited coaxial stub is analyzed. The input impedance and the resonant frequency were obtained by using the moment method for the analysis. Calculated results are found to be in good agreement with measurements. As a result, the operation and the effect of the loaded element of a short-circuited coaxial stub were clarified. And, the resonant frequency of the rhombic loop antenna was able to be reduced up to 37% by the short-circuited coaxia1 stub. Practical design parameters to optimize the antenna size and impedance matching are investigated.

The "coverage on the road" is studied in this paper for applying millimeter waves to the broadcasting system especially for mobile reception. The system proposed in this paper utilizes a directive antenna in order to receive the best wave from direct, diffracted and reflected ones. An experiment in the frequency range of 21 GHz showed the validation of this system. Next, a computer simulation with different parameters, such as CNR, frequency and coverage area, was conducted to show the required number of base station and details of receiving waves.

The practical usage of the latest internet technology and its application have been of interest to numerous broadcasters. An effective new type of digital content utilizing a combination of this internet technology and traditional broadcasting technologies is also expected. We at NHK have recently achieved a production of various effective internet content for the Sydney Olympic Game In this paper, we describe our current works in producing the internet content and designing the content production system which enables to share various data with television data broadcasting.

In muti-channel CATV transmission systems, non-linearity of amplifiers causes intermodulation(IM). IM distortions impair the signal in CATV transmission and degrade the BER in digital channels. We have measured probability density function(p.d.f.) of IM in full digital CATV systems, and studied on relation bebtween p.d.f.and BER of 64QAM.

We exhibited Reception of Terrestrial Digital TV Broadcasting in 24 places. In order to construct SFN between the Naha base station and the Nakijin relay station, we studied the condition of reception for a half year to calculate the appropriate transmission parameters of delay time, guard intervals, and convolution code.

In the transmitting system of DTTB(digital terrestrial television broadcasting), we must judge whether the input signal of the transmission equipment is an OFDM signal to prevent unnecessary radiation. Toshiba Corp.developed the OFDM squelch that detected an OFDM signal. This unit uses guard interval correlation in the time domain. This paper describes outline of laboratory experiment results, simulating the environment of the transmitting station and relay station of DTTB. We confirmed that the performance of this unit is sufficient in the presence of non-linearity, multi-pass, coupling multi-pass interference, and analog interference.

In constructing digital terrestrial television network, the most important point is to study output C/N degradation in cascaded digital relay transmitters. In this paper, we describe obtained C/N data when five relay transmitters are cascaded and have proposed how to improve network C/N by analyzing these data.

The digital terrestrial television broadcasting(DTTB)will start in 2003 in Japan, and the DTTB has adopted the OFDM transmission. the link budget is calculated based on the bit error rate to realize the DTTB. The Gaussian noise is used to obtain the bit error rate, but the noise in the city is impulsive and its amplitude probability density is not Gaussian distribution. In this paper, the influence of the impulse noise on the OFDM transmission is mentioned and the amplitude probability density of the noise in VHF band has been measured. BER improvement using non-linear amplifier is also described.

The standard reception model of Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting is the fixed reception using booster amplifiers. At the fixed reception using the booster amplifiers, some radio interference occurs because of the IM of the booster amplifiers. We experimentally clarified the relationship between the IM and the booster amplifiers, and demonstrated one example of the radio interference at the fixed reception using the booster amplifiers.

At relay stations in SFN(Single Frequency Networks)for DTTB(Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting), the distortion or oscillation of the transmittihg signals caused by coupling loop interference between the transmitting and receiving antennas is a severe problem. To alleviate this interference, we have developed a coupling loop interference canceller which uses an electrical circuit to cancel the interference, and a receiving antenna whith has reduced sidelobes. This paper describes the results of a single frequency retransmission field trial at the Shiroishi relay station for DTTB in May, 2000. In the trial, we verified stable retransmission by using the coupling loop interference canceller and low-sidelobe receiving antenna, under the difficult condition that the power of the coupling loop interference was greater than that of the master station wave.
