    This paper proposes an architecture for an affine-based motion estimation algorithm. Although an affine-based motion estimation algorithm can estimate accurate motion from image sequences, it requires high computational power. In order to avoid such computational complexity, we propose a hardware architecture for the motion estimator. Furthermore, we propose a method to achieve high throughput and low hardware complexity in the motion estimator. In this paper, we describe the motion estimator in VHDL and then show the result of design using an EPGA.

    In ordinary Block Matching Algorithms(BMA), motion vectors are defined at the point to minimize the Mean Squared Error(MSE)or the Mean Absolute Error(MAE)of the intensity. However, in certain background images, the motion vectors whose MSE is minimum may not yield the best rate-distortion performance. Therefore, we propose a method to define the motion vectors which yield the best rate-distortion performance which is composed of three elements, the bit rate required for motion compensated predictive coding, the bit-rate required for prediction error transforming coding, and the reconstruction distortion. If the codes is H.263, the proposed method can reduce the total bit rate approximately 10%-50% with the same PSNR as compared to the conventional methods.

    We need accurate zoom ratios between a base frame and other frames for resolution enhancements using plural images in zoom sequences. In this report, we show the problem of the existing zoom ratio estimation methods. Next, we show a new estimation method to decrease the error of the accumulated zoom ratio by estimating zoom ratio between observation frames and panoramic images pasted according to the zoom ratio, and we show experimental result of zoom ratio estimations using the proposed method. Then, we show the method and these experimental results of estimating the high resolution image using the estimation zoom ratio.

    Today, many audiovisual delivery systems, including video streaming and videoconferencing, are being developed for use over a range of networking technologies, the differing characteristics of which pose problems for service level interoperability. Multimedia transcoding is one means to provide interoperability between different types of audiovisual terminals and between terminals that connect to different networks. This paper describes a flexible multimedia transcoder that enables service interoperability between different types of terminals across heterogeneous networks. In particular, the target of this development is to connect to H.323 client and OdBits servers from a client application in mobile terminals via the developed multimedia transcoder.

    In this paper vector quantization(VQ)is applied to epipolar plane images(EPIs)for compression of ray space data. EPIs representing two parameters of the four-dimensional ray space consist of straight line segments. This geometrical texture causes larger correlation among the vectors in VQ. In the experiment a sample EPI is divided into square blocks each of which corresponds to a vector, and distribution of the vectors in the vector space is investigated. The result demonstrated that the vectors of an FPI are localized more distinctively than those of a natural sceneimage . This paper proposes a method for exploiting the property of vector localization on EPIs. In the method an EPI is divided into blocks along sloping line segments. The simulation shows that these oblique blocks increase correlation among the vectors, and consequently improve coding efficiency of VQ. These results imply an advantage of VQ for the coding of EPIs.

    Recent years, In the field of CG and virtual reality, research on the arbitrary view image generation using the technique called Image-Based Rendering(IBR)is done briskly. We generated the system that generates arbitrary view image in real-time by PC cluster that consists of 16 client PCs, and one hose PC. In this paper, we report the system that installs a camera in the shape of a dome, and can observe the inside of a dome with arbitrary viewpoint.

    We evaluate the newly developed digital distribution scheme. The divided high-speed MPEG-2 TS signal exceeding 30Mbps is transmitted with the multiple carriers cable TV and compounded on reception side. The BER characteristics versus gauss noise and sine wave interference are measured using prototypes. The result shows that transmission of a high-speed MPEG-2 TS signal by this system is possible for broadcasting if transmission performance meets Japanese standard.

    Face has three-dimensional structure. If we are able to facial Analysis using 3-D information by Laser Range Finder(LRF), expect to high-precision and pervasive facial image analysis based on conventional technology. In this paper, we make 3-D information Multi-Resolution Analysis(MRA)by Wavelet transform, and try to extraction of facial Individuality by Wavelet coefficient of 3-D facial image.

    Multichannel restoration approaches have been shown to outperform independent single-channel ones when multiple observations with significant correlation are available. In this paper, we present a wavelet-based multiscale Wiener restoration approach that takes into account the highly correlated cross-scale edge structure in wavelet domain to obtain superior results to the conventional Wiener approach. A specific redundant filter bank algorithm known as the a trous algorithm is used in dyadic wavelet transform so that the decomposed scales can be associated directly with the multichannel Wiener restoration filter. Experiments show the proposed multiscale Wiener restoration approach is capable of outperforming the conventional Wiener approach.

    MANET(Mobile Ad-hoc NETworks)has been discussed in IETF MANET WG, MANET is assumed to be used in various situations, say a case where rescue networks are needed in disaster or a case when mobile terminals should be connected each other with ease in a conference. Recently, MANET is being realized as mobile terminals become into wide use and wireless technologies have been developed. Existing routing methods for IP networks, however, is not applicable to MANET straightforward due to mobility of terminals. In this presentation, I will explain the characteristics and its requirements of MANET, performance issues, typical routing protocols(DSDV, CGSR, AODV, DSR, TORA, ABR, ZRP), and problems.

    A high-resolution partial image distribution system(HPIDS)is one of network-applications through high-speed networks. It can be utilized for tele-education systems. The HPIDS consists of an image capture sub-system and an image distribution sub-system. From multi-platform point of view, we have developed clients of image distribution sub-system using Java applet. From the previous work[2], [3], we newly implement the history function for users to takea look of received pictures in mainly the University of Tokushima. In addition to this, the functions of detection of a lecture's position and voice distribution are also implemented by Optwave Laboratory. In this paper, we explain the functions newly implemented and experimental results.

    We propose infrared wireless systems with nultiple subcarrier modulation to reduce average optical power by allocating appropriate amplitude for corresponding subcarrier to the punctured patterns. Although the punctured bits are not allocated to the subcarrier amplitude in the systems with rate-conpatible punctured convolutional codes, in the proposed systems, they are replaced by the dummy information, and the appropriate amplitudes are allocated to reduce the average optical power. In this paper, we propose two schemes to select the amplitude values of subcarriers for the bit positions corresponding to '0'in the punctured patterns : one scheme uses only the zero amplitude value(proposed 1), and the other scheme selects the appropriate amplitude value among 0, and ±1 in order to minimize average optical power(proposed 2). We show that the proposed 2 can achieve the bast BER performance at the same average optical power. We also show that proposed 2 can achieve the best SNR performance at the same number of subcarriers.

    This report proposes an inter-destination(or group)synchronization scheme, which adjusts the output timing among destinations, in distributed virtual environments where voice and video streams are output in a 3-D virtual space. We introduce the concept of the global importance as well as the local importance of media objects, each of which includes a voice stream and a video one. The two types of importance are determined by the positional relation between media objects and users, and they represent how strongly each object attracts the users'attention. The local importance is the importance which is judged from the viewpoint of each user. It is used under intra-stream and inter-stream synchronization control. The global importance means the importance which is judged from the point of view of all the users in the virtual space. We enhance the synchronization maestro scheme, which the authers previously proposed, so as to adjust the output timing of media streams among the destinations according to the global importance. In addtion, we illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme by experiment.

    With the terrific increase in traffic volume, and the introduction of new real-time, multimedia, and multicasting applications, the traditional Internet protocols and services became inadequate. To fix this problem, we propose new signaling protocol "SRSVP(Simple Resource ReSerVation Protocol)" and new QoS routing protocol "HQLIP(Hierarchical QoS Link Information Protocol)" . And we developed routers with these protocols. In this paper, we summarize these protocols and introduce routers with these protocols.

    In this paper, we propose a queueing method, called policed priority queueing(PPQ), which provides QoS guarantees for each flow on the Internet. We implemented PPQ in a router and evaluate its performance. Our results show that PPQ is quite effective to ensure the QoS of real-time applications, such as voice and TV conf erences.
