    It is essential for car drivers to obtain sufficient visual information, but the dead angle caused by the pillar is often a problem to ensure the safety. In order to solve this problem, optical camouflage technologies using a retro-reflective projection technology is a promising approach. However, it is difficult for the driver to wear a head-mounted projector. Therefore we have proposed the method to separate a projector from the driver's head. In our method, a screen attached to the front pillars should have characteristics to reduce the influence of the variance of environment light while maintaining high contrast in the vertical direction. In this study, the authors measured the luminance of the projected image on a white screen, beads type retroreflector, prism type retroreflector, and beads type retroreflector covered with a diffuser. The results show that beads type retroreflector covered with a diffuser is effective for this method.

    A novel notion "retro-transmissive" material as an optical element for head mounted display is introduced and discussed. Using this, so called "false image projector" is proposed. This projector does not need any screen such as the retro-reflective screen that was generally used for head mounted projection system. The fundamental operating principle of the optics is discussed both in macro-view and micro-view. The simple early prototype is developped and the result of experiments indicated the optical system works as proposed operating principle.

    Volumetric 3D displays are able to provide spherical coverage but unable to present occlusion. On the other hand, automultiscopic 3D displays are able to present occlusion but unable to provide spherical coverage. Therefore, we developed the omni-directional automultiscopic display, which can provide both spherical coverage and occlusion. The display consists of two parts: a mirror covered with holographic diffuser rotating around two axes and a modified high-speed DMD projector. This paper describes theory and implementation of the novel display, mainly focusing on its hardware structure.

    We investigate multimodal interface that utilizes non-verbal information like gaze directions or gestures in collaborative work in a multi-display environment. A system which allows users to manipulate windows and cursors using their heads' positions and directions are implemented. An experiment and a questionnaire are conducted. As a result, we found that the system improved the tasks in aspects of both efficiency and user's preference.

    We have proposed and developed scent projectors, which deliver smells to a target person locally via free space. However, prototype systems so far had a limitation that the user is assumed to be sitting on a chair or standing still. In order to apply scent projectors to walking users, we designed a new system that can predict the users' walking trajectory and deliver smells to the user. We first used a magnetic tracker to measure the users' head position, but switched to a "range imaging 3D-camera," in order to fully take advantage of the merit of scent projectors that users are not required to wear any devices. First, the three-dimensional position of the user is detected for each frame, by applying background subtraction method to the sequence of range images. Second, the users' trajectory is predicted by estimating the velocity, based on the detected position and time stamp for each frame. Experimental results based on this method shows that the system can predict the trajectory of waking users by using range imaging camera, as well as by using magnetic tracker.

    Scents can be used to remind a person of his/her memory, such as scheduled events. Researchers have developed systems to emit scents associated with events, but with most of previous systems scents reach the unspecified number of people because they simply diffused the scent. We propose a schedule notification system by using a scent projector that can deliver scents to a specific user. We conducted two experiments: first one was to confirm the ability to deliver scents locally, by asking two subjects sitting side-by-side whether they could notice the smell when the system aimed one of two subjects. Second experiment was whether the subject could distinguish the kind of scent, when one of two kinds of scent was delivered. The results showed that the system could deliver scents quite locally, and subjects could successfully distinguish the kind of scent. With these results, we could show the feasibility of informing scheduled events personally by using multiple scents.

    Olfaction stimulates our emotion most vividly among five senses, so it is effective to use scent as a medium for communication. In order to show hundreds of thousands kinds of scent one by one, as many as hundreds of thousands of scented substances are needed and it is impossible to be achieved. In this research, we use knowledge of cognitive psychology that olfaction is susceptible to other senses, especially vision. Practically, we suppose a new method presenting a scent and a picture not corresponding with the scent at the same time and having audience smell not what they actually smell but what they see. If we achieve the goal of giving an olfactory illusion, we will be able to represent various scents by few kinds of scented substances. As a result, this research will make a large impact on olfactory display systems which are underdeveloped yet.

    This paper proposes a camera-based finger tracking system for no-restrained direct manipulation of virtual objects. The real-time estimation of the occluded finger was realized by using Natural Position (NP) model that is defined as the correlation function among the postures of the neighboring fingers and the Potential Energy (PE) model that describes the anti-mobility of a finger. The virtual object direct manipulation system was developed by combining the tracking system and a general-purpose physical simulation library. The estimation of the occluded fmger positions and the no-restrained direct manipulation of virtual objects were successfully attained.

    For aiming of haptic perception assistance of contact state using a small-sized device, the substitution of dynamic changes of the normal and the tangential forces to the fingertip is proposed by controlling the magnitude and the position of the vibrotactile phantom sensation. The evaluation experiments using a prototype device having four pins demonstrated the feasibility of the substitution.

    In this paper we create a haptic interaction environment which displays material sensations using vibrations. In real word, objects vibrate when they tapped. By reproducing this vibration, haptic interfaces can present material sensation to the user. In our system, vibrations and normal forces are calculated separately and displayed together. We evaluate perceptual nature of human under vibration stimuli and effect of vibration stimuli to object manipulations.

    In this paper we present a method for displaying force feedback using rigid body simulator based on analytical methods. A force feedback system consists of haptic rendering process and physical simulation process. Since stable control of haptic interfaces requires update rate of higher than 1kHz, haptic rendering processes require the same update rate. On the other hand, rigid body simulators require low update rate to run simulation because of computational limitation. Therefore, it is difficult to display correct force feedback to users. We present a synchronization technique between physical simulation process and haptic rendering process using local dynamics. This technique enable to make consistency between haptic rendering process and physical simulation process. We did a simple simulation to check the effectiveness of the synchronization technique.

    In this paper, an elasticity information compression method for impulse response deformation model is discussed. In our past paper, we proposed an approach to haptic interaction with dynamically deformable object. In the approach, the behavior of an object is defined by a set of temporal deformation patterns after impulse force is applied to each degree of freedom, which we call impulse response deformation model. The time complexity of computing interaction force is independent of the complexity of the model, however, vast memory is required to store variety of impulse responses. To solve this problem, we discuss about compression method of the impulse renponses.

    Pseudo-haptics is a feedback phenomena that we can feel haptics together with visual feedback without physical force. For example, pseudo-haptics is a kind of haptics presentation methods with a device like a mouse that does not have haptic mechanism. We focused on pseudo-haptics and have tried to evaluation it. We introduce EMG (electromygogram) to evaluate pseudo-haptics. We conducted EMG evaluation of pesudo-haptics compared with asubjective evaluation method. The result indicates that EMG data were changed when users feel pseudo-haptics.

    This paper reports detection threshold of human hairy skin when a vibration is presented on a skin via the hair human has. This vibration is provided from a tip of an instrument which travels horizontally against the human skin also the tip holds the hair. And the stimulation point is the middle of hair on the back of human finger, then the instrument does not contact with the surface of the skin directly. Presented stimulations have any frequency and amplitude, we measured threshold this vibration is detected. After some tentative experiments with three persons, the detection thresholds of human hairy skin represent a curve similar to the threshold curve of Patinian. This result has a suggestion that the stimulation infects Patinian capsule.

    A trial of interactive remote teaching was performed by shared virtual space between 2 Universities. Its features were interactiveness of the teaching by teachers of both universities, collaboration between information engineering and psychology, and realization of shared virtual space. This was a new and fruitful attempt, and got favorable evaluation from participated students.

    This paper describes about the conversational robot that performs an interface role between the intellectual system and the human.     We propose a review system to verification of actual machine behavior in the actual environment. The system is based on Mixed Reality technology for viewing and reviewing of internal parameters computed by the humanoids against the actual environment. In the environment, the parameters snapped on each sampling time are treated as data streams, and stored to the distributed log servers in real time. 3-D graphical representation of the parameters helps us to observe plural multi-dimensional parameters. A video see-through head mounted display is used for viewing the representation. The stored parameters can be projected on the current actual scene from arbitrary viewpoints. By the viewing and reviewing functions, the Mixed Reality environment becomes a powerful tool for the autonomous behavior developer in order to debug the actual behavior by contrast with the actual environment. This paper describes the implementation of the system with a full size humanoid, HRP-2, and shows some experimental examples.

    In this article, we report novel measurement method designed by a couple of plane light sources made by IR-LED array and a photo interrupter. Light sources emit light by the same frequency and the different phase. And optical axis of the sources is set up as orthogonal. Then, the signal place is diffused with the space where phase is different in each position. And the signal which is received by photo interrupter is analyzed, the position is analyzed from the signal which is received by photo interrupter.

    In this study, we observed muscle activity of common digital extensor muscle and flexer digitorum superficialis muscle in forearm with the multi-channel electromyography(EMG) measurement system using conductive fabric for research the mechanism of finger tremor. We compared up and down motion of laser pointer affixed to middle finger to muscle activity of common digital extensor muscle and flexor digitorum superficialis muscle. As a result, common digital extensor muscle move a few msec earlier if middle finger moved upward, and flexor digitorum superficialis muscle move a few msec earlier if middle finger downward.

    In this paper, we propose an EMG(electromyography) signal processing method for easy wearing EMG interfaces that can be attached or put on like clothes, supporters, etc. Although we can expect that such wearable EMG interfaces realize convenient multipoint EMG sensors, problems would arise in contacting electrodes, e.g., the positions and contacting conditions of the electrodes can easily change. To cope with this problem, we propose a method for choosing a few representative electrodes out of the may ones attached to a wearable interface. This selection makes recongnition more reliable and reduces the computation time in a training (parameter adjusting) phase. Our experimental result on fingers dorsiflexion motions shows that the proposed method works properly for a middle finger. The result also suggests that our method is applicable to the other fingers by using more electrodes.

    The purpose of this study was find out a throwing motion which actualize effective pitching. In this study, the multi-channel electromyography(EMG) measurement system using conductive fabric was designed. As a result, we found differences of EMG between beginner and expert. Experts bent their wrist toward the palm. Experts inflected elbow and lifted elbow to their shoulder height. Experts relaxed their muscles between taking back and release. In particular, storing of energy in tendon at taking back and using the energy between taking back and release are important for throwing motion which actualize effective pitching.

    Numbers of devices are distributed in the environment in wearable and ubiquitous computing systems, and the devices need power supply and communication ways as well as flexibility of placement, but wireless and wired communications intrinsically contain the problems for power supply or flexibility of placement. In this paper, we propose the flexible network system, named as TextileNet, for wearable and ubiquitous computing systems. TextileNet employs the wear whose both sides consist of low-resistance fabric as electrodes, where the power are supplied from a battery, and the devices are attached by sticking for electric contact to obtain power and communication on the wear' s surface. This paper describes TextileNet system, as well as its implementation and evaluation.

    Recently, multichannel speaker systems are developed to provide a high presence. However, many of systems needs a lot of costs for special hardware. In this research, we propose the new virtual sound space generation system using a general purpose device connected to the network. This system can present spatial information without any special hardware but only with software.

    Ordinal TVs or PC monitors are used to present images. However, these image-presenting equipments are fixed and cannnot be moved and rotated. When pictures present with shooting angle based on audiences' looking position, their presence will be much higher. In this paper, we investigated the method for improving presense by using moving-projecter and roaming images. To represent the camera shooting angle, we used optical flow. An optical flow method resulted in errors of 7.5% of the camera directions, which was accurate enough for our purpose. Furthermore, we compared exisiting presenting method (non-moving) and our method (moving). Six subjects participated in this experiment. The result indicates that our method could help understanding of the positions of objects in images more precisely. We can say that the proposed method is effective to improve presense.

    It is said that a human will glance at a point with a large volume of information. It is thought, however, that the "information" is not only the volume of information implied by general information theory, but also the gaze area presumption from various directions. The accuracy of presuming the gaze area is not necessarily high and this paper aims to improve the accuracy by using the mode of the image.

    We have developed a Brain Computer Interface (BCI) system to prevent car drivers actively from falling asleep. So far several technologies, such as imaging sensors to detect the face direction, behavior of the drivers, have been developed. They can not find the state of carelessness precisely by the imaging sensors. However, the brain wave, the amplitude of a late positive wave (P3 or P300) of the event-related brain potential (ERP), can indicate the amount of concentration of a user. By actively changing the source of audio stimuli, depending on the current ERP, our system keeps the user in the state of concentration and prevents the user from falling asleep. Thus, our system, auditory BCI system, monitors mental state of the drivers actively and warns them effectively.
