    In Peer-to-Peer (P2P) content sharing, users can share their contents by contributing their own resources to one another. However, since there is no incentive for contributing resources to others, users may attempt to obtain contents without any contribution. To motivate users to contribute their resources to the service, incentive rewarding mechanisms have been proposed. On the other hand, emerging wireless technologies, such as beyond third generation cellular and Mobile WiMAX, provide high-speed Internet access for wireless users. Using these high-speed wireless access, wireless users can use P2P services and share their contents with other wireless users and with fixed users. However, this diversification of access networks makes it difficult to appropriately assign rewards to each user according to their contributions. This is because the cost necessary for contribution is different in different access networks. In this paper, we explain in detail an incentive mechanism called EMOTIVER, which improves the service quality by appropriately assigning rewards to each user even if users have various cost functions, and discuss its extensibility.

    In peer-to-peer(P2P) content sharing, users can share their contents by contributing their own resources to one another. However, when contributing, users experience psychological dissatisfaction, namely cost. Because of the cost, most users attempt to obtain content without any contributions. To motivate users to contribute their resources to the service, incentive-rewarding mechanisms have been proposed. EMOTIVER is an incentive mecha-nism that accommodates users' subjective cost, which was not dealt with in conventional mechanisms. Previously, we have clarified effective rewarding methods for different dominant costs. In this paper, we assume a more diversified cost condition and evaluate the robustness of EMOTIVER in the condition. Prom the comparison with the ideal result, we evaluate the optimality of our rewarding methods. Furthermore, we propose a reward reassignment method and show the improvement by the method through simulation.

    In wireless mesh network, links physically close to each other works by sharing limited wireless resource, and appropriate load-balanced routing is crucial for efficient use of bandwidth. Multipath routing is one of promising approaches for load-balanced routing, particularly offered load per a session is relatively high. Although many past studies on muti-path routing aim to distribute offered load to each path equally, it is not sufficient to avoid congestion. This paper presents adaptive per-route-load allocation scheme in multi-path routing, where load is determined depending on the difference of delay cost of each route. Simulation results confirm the usefulness of the proposed scheme both in terms of average delay and delay variance.

    Recently, multimedia applications such as video and audio come into wide use. When heterogeneous traffic is accommodated in a network, Call Admission Control(CAC) will be required for maintaining quality of services. Because the values of various applications are not always proportional to the bandwidth, therefore, conventional CACs, which aim to increase resource utilization under the condition that users' satisfaction is proportional to their own bandwidth, have difficulties in maximizing user satisfaction. As stated above, we proposed a novel CAC strategy for maximizing total accommodated flows based on a new philosophy that heterogeneous flows should be treated equally in networks. And we presented a theoretical analysis of the model and numerical analyses that show the effectiveness of our CAC. In this paper, we conducted a qualitative characteristic analysis of a change of an optimal threshold to realize minimum total call-blocking rate, when both traffic intensity of narrowband and broadband flow change. As a result in this characteristic analysis, we elucidated that total call blocking-rate correlate with optimal threshold under some given traffic parameter conditions. Then, we intrduce some guiding principles for developing a practical threshold configuring method.

    Customizing the user interface by users' preference is strongly required, as mobile phones are primarily designed for personal use. In addition, mobile phones have been adopting to the 3D UI. However, 3D UI calls for far more development cost than that of 2D UI, and thus it is impossible to provide number of 3D UI contents sucient enough to meet users' demand for customizing. So, we invented a method that would reduce the 3D UI content development cost, with which we let the engineer create the "program factor" as a "template", while designer separately create "design factor" that would be merged to the created template.

    A panoramic image is the image that captures a wide scope scene in horizontal direction. Various techniques had been studied to acquire this panorama image; a method to use a calibrated multi-camera system, a method to stitch multiple images, and a method to use a curved surface mirror and a wide-angle lens (omni-camera). However, there are problems in each method. In case of the multi-camera system, high precision calibration among multiple cameras is necessary and the system becomes complicated. In the stitching method case, we can use a normal digital camera, but overlapping areas between images cause discomfort at the stitched regions due to differences of brightness and colors between images caused by lighting condition and exposure change. In case of the omni-camera, we can capture panoramic images easily and directly, but we suffer from uneven resolution in the eye direction and overall low resolution of the captured images. Therefore in this paper, we propose a hybrid method which calibrates brightness and color and keeps high resolution by composing omni-camera images and normal-camera images. In addition, we study about registration techniques between a panorama image and a normal image.

    In this paper, we report the effects of improving viewer's impression for videos by non-photorealistic rendering. Our subjective test, first, reveals that non-photorealistic videos improve viewer's impression on several sub-elements in the original photorealistic videos without detracting overall visual preference. We, then, confirm that non-photorealistic videos reduce perceived jerkiness even in the low frame rate compared to the original photorealistic videos. We also report the subjective test methods designed for the evaluations.

    Regarding the automatic transcription, studies on multi-pitch estimation have been pursued for a long time. However, most studies have not implemented a system that can endure practical use at present. It is not solved by the performance gain of the computer because its difficulty is not only the problem of computational complexity. Therefore we propose a transcription-aid system that cooperates with a user without entrusting all. In this paper, the user inputs the highest note in the harmony, and the system cuts the bandwidth over its fundamental frequency. Moreover, higher accuracy is achieved by using the music knowledge of the chord progression. We experimented on estimating the fundamental frequencies of MIDI and actual audio signals and confirmed the effectiveness of these methods.

    As the ubiquitous environment is taking root, there are calls for services that deliver content appropriate for the individual user's personal interests and preferences. Services are already being provided that deduce the interests or preferences of the user by analyzing his or her log data and provide content appropriate for his or her physical/mental/emotional state. A method of deducing the state of mind of the user has been proposed, which analyzes pictographic characters in emails sent by mobile phones. In this paper, we attempt to improve the accuracy of state-of-mind deduction by analyzing not only pictographic characters but also emoticons that many people use to express their feelings explicitly. We have developed an algorithm for extracting state-of-mind elements associated with each pictographic character or emoticon, and defining it with vector values of these elements. We have developed a prototype system, and verified the effectiveness of the algorithm by having a group of students use the system. We have applied the algorithm to the selection of music, which is considered to be close related to people's feelings. Specifically, we have proposed a method of selecting an appropriate piece of music based on a music type, which is represented by the "number of chords", "sound strength", and "melody pattern" in a piece of music.

    In recent years, the advance in mobile terminal enables to mount a high resolution display device. On the other hand, the increasing availability of broadband communication and permeation of 1-seg have led to an increase in the popularity of video services. However, the current video service in a mobile environment can not use the performance of the display device enough because of the limitation of transmission band. In this paper, we express the vision to the high resolution video service in a mobile environment. Additionally, the outline of our super resolution technology based on this vision is introduced.

    The authors propose employing interactive music systems for designing soundscape of life space. Expected users of the system are municipal governments, and expected usages are activation of city area, improvement of environment of public spaces and promotion of events. The principles on developing the system are: 1) to be inexpensive. 2) to be easy to cater to needs of measures. The authors named the system M[you]sic and developed the prototype system. It monitors pedestrian traffic with infrared sensors, and generates music. Demonstration experiments have been carried out in Maebashi, Gunma. The results of experiments are: 1) Impression of M[you]sic seems to be fair (from the questionnaire). 2) M[you]sic can be utilized to attract people. The authors are planning to improve the system and to evaluate effects of it, based on analysis of the results of experiments and feedbacks from municipal governments.

    In wireless LANs, it becomes a problem that the time which cannot communicate while performing the handoff becomes comparatively large. The handoff is constituted by three procedures, probe, authentication, and association. It is known that the most of handoff latency is the time which needs to probe new access points. For this reason, this paper focuses on to reduce the probe lateny. We propose two new probe methods, the one reduces wasted probe wait and wasted channel by using neighbor graph which shows handoff relationship between access points, and the others reduces wasted probe wait by using carrier sense to speculate a channel state. Via simulation, the proposed methods reduces the probe latency. Moreover, it is shown that probe latency is reduced by combining existing methods and proposed methods.

    In this paper, we consider power-saving techniques for mobile terminals in ubiquitous environment. As a means for realizing power-saving, we focus on caching techniques and attempt to save the power consumption required for wireless network devices by reducing meaningless transmissions using local caches. The use of caching techniques is required to manage the consistency between original data and their caches. Many existing protocols for keeping the cache consistency have been extensively developed during the past decade so far, and we investigate and summarize these existing techniques in this paper. Finally, we describe our target ubiquitous environment and propose a probabilistic cache consistency protocol.

    This paper describes an efficient mechanism for correcting estimation errors inherent in existing WLAN-based localization systems. One of major problems in such localization systems is to degrade the estimation accuracy due to lacks of sufficient training data and temporal changes in received signal strength indications. We propose a location correction technique based on geographical locality of the estimation errors. This proposed correction technique is designed for exploiting users collaboration to improve the efficiency of the correction. More specifically, each surveyed location is associated with knowledge of error corrections that have been conducted by users, and is stored into a database. The system improves the usability of users' correction by presenting the knowledge corresponding to the estimated location.
