This paper describes a 3-D display that can express differences between depths at extended distances of over a hundred meters for moving observers using artificially generated motion parallax and differences in pattern sizes. The experimental results demonstrated that the depths of images at long distances could be exactly perceived.

We developed 12-inch 9-view autostereoscopic partial 2D/3D switchable display using liquid crystal gradient index (GRIN) lens. We optimized liquid crystal (LC) material and electrode structure. Also we simulated optically by the stacked refraction-index distribution model and the model matched the measured 3D performance well. The novel lens switching driving method enables 3D window size and position to be changed freely at high switching speed.

For the first time, we have developed a 60-inch diagonal size see-through display using polymer network liquid crystals (PNLC) technology. The color display system by combination of the see-through display and a projector enables distinguishing eye-catch effect. It is able to be created new application of displays such as information display, digital signage and substitution of window.

For full HD 3D plasma displays, we newly developed a high luminous efficiency design, a short discharge-time-lag material, and a new driving method for 3D. High picture quality was realized by a new cell design, materials, and a panel driving sequence.

An edge-lit backlight with thin structure and 2-D dimming function is a highlighted requirement. For realizing a thin backlight unit for 2-D dimmable display, a monolithic segmented functional light-guide plate has been developed using recessed graded height U-grooves as semi-partitions between consecutive segments for controlling the cross-talk between the segments. A single segment is characterized with louver prisms that function as unilateral reflectors for light distributing, directing and extracting. Arrays of rounded micro-prisms for in-coupling and out-coupling are designed on the LGP for light cone shaping on the backlight. The light guide has a length of 73.0mm, a width of 40.7mm and a thickness of 0.7mm. The width and graded height of the recessed U-groove between the segments are 0.020mm and 0.10-0.50mm.
