We aim to make it easier and more comfortable to input text via a TV remote control device. Our proposal is a character input method based on detecting the tilt of the device. Users can easily acquire reflex-level typing skills. Experiments confirm the feasibility of the method.

Flexible optical disks (FODs) can be rotated at 15,000rpm and have the capability of recording at 250Mbps, the rate necessary for a high definition video recorder system (HD-D5). FODs rotating at 15,000rpm must be set close to (within about 100μm) the stabilizer to suppress the axial run-out. Under this severe condition, FODs risk collision with the stabilizer when the rotation starts or stops. To overcome this problem, we developed a new stabilizing method that can suppress the axial run-out while keeping a sufficiently wide clearance between the disk and stabilizer by restricting airflow to the stabilizer.

To improve the quality and timeliness of TV program recommendations, a recommendation system that uses life log data such as browsing histories on WEB, locations visited, operation history of consumer electronics, and personal scheduler on PC is proposed. A subjective experiment shows that life log data is effective in improving the quality of program recommendations.

This paper proposes a new method to automatically detect thumbnails which includes important objects from video content. Our approach extracts video frames that show important objects, by recognition of typical TV production techniques. We also present a prototype application for DVRs, which utilizes the proposed method to enable easy access to important scenes of TV programs.

An automatic object tracking technology is developed for a digital camera. This technology enables automatic focus on a moving target object in order to avoid unfocused image shooting. We have developed a new modified object tracking algorithm based on K-means Tracker algorithm that is adaptive to the change of the object shape and appearance. Several modifications for higher tracking performance and lower computation cost are introduced for the digital camera application.
