For 2D to 3D conversion, operators need to draw depth map to illustrate the depth information in the video frame by frame by hand. Such operations cost expensive though it is a general way in post productions in movie industry. In this report, we present a technique that assists to make depth map with fewer operations by making a unicursal outline for each of objects and setting depth value to a few points on the outlines.

This paper presents methods of generating an integral 3D image from multiple depth images generated from the multi-view. As a depth image does not include the 3D information at self-occlusion areas, those areas are displayed dark as missing areas, when a depth image is converted into an integral 3D image. Thus, we developed methods to improve the quality of an integral 3D image by completing the missing area using oblique projection images in converting depth images into integral 3D images. Furthermore, we improved the quality of integral 3D images by interpolating the area, where multiple depth images can not complete, using nearest neighbor method to oblique projection images.

3D display based on real-image formation provides various depth cues, including binocular disparity, convergence, motion parallax, and accommodation responses. We have fabricated a crossed-mirror for imaging of an LED panel. An aerial imaging of LEDs has been realized. Convergences of LED lights have been observed with a moving screen. The aerial image is formed with high NA light rays. Deviation Image formation of LED panel Accommodation responses for the aerial LED image have been investigated experimentally with autorefractometer. It is revealed that the aerial LED image induced the viewers' accommodation responses to the image position.

We evaluated perceived depth dependence on a lighting angle and observer's position in arc 3-D display. The arc 3-D display is composed of many scratches with arc shape, for example, on an acrylic board. Lighting these scratches makes two highlight spots in one arc scratch with both eyes, resulting in one perceived highlight spot with the depth in front of or behind the board. As the result, the perceived depth is increased as the lighting angle decreases. Even when an observer effectively moves right and left from the center position of the board, the same perceived depth is successfully obtained as that of center position.

Aiming at 3D visual system for ultra-realistic communication, National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) does research on electronic holography technology. The first period was five years from April 2006 to March 2011. At that period, we developed some prototype systems such as a realtime electronic holography system that captured and reconstructed 3D real objects in non-dark room. The second period is going on from the April 2011 as a five-year program. In this paper, we will introduce some research results of the first period.

For the realization of an electronic holography with a wide viewing-zone, we have advanced development of an ultra-fine spatial light modulator driven by spin-transfer-switching, which we call Spin-SLM. In this study, we designed and fabricated Spin-SLM, which was comprised of a ten-pixel array with a fine pitch of 1 μm. We have successfully observed a spin-transfer-switching in Spin-SLM. Furthermore, in order to prove the possibility of a holographic display using Spin-SLM, modulation of diffracted light in Spin-SLM was accomplished by switching with an external magnetic field, and the demonstration of reconstructed images was performed by the hologram which consists of Gd-Fe magneto-optical material.

The Dihedral Corner Reflector Array (DCRA) is an imaging optical device, with no optical axis or focal distance, capable of forming undistorted real images at any desired position in free space. With this device, we are proposing a system that can display sections of volumetric data like CT or MRI scans at required positions. Since the floating images are real images, they can be superposed on physical objects like position markers or wireframes, which can serve as aids in understanding locational relations.
