By using IP-based transport scheme as a method aiming at hybrid delivery, we develop services that combine digital broadcasting and broadband communications and examine technologies to delivery broadcasting services more convenient. We suppose one example of service that a program can be watched successively even if the situation of transmission channels and available terminals change. This paper describes control information that a system should provide for the service and select methods of components using the control information.

We thought if you use the IPDC technology to superimpose the IP data in the broadcast wave, and expanded the possibility of broadcasting. While it is possible in theory, We were wondering that do the actual broadcast facilities, and the wonder that can be, How much is the amount of transmission. So We were verified using the facilities of our master. As a result, We found that it is possible to superimpose the IP data without affecting the audio and video are possible even if about 2Mbps on the air. We are currently doing research on services, to participate in the "Mutiscreen Broadcasting Study Group", a combination of multi-screen television and IPDC. In addition, in order to proceed with the verification, We did get a license test station broadcasting experimental area.

Among the services provided by 'mobacas' V-High band multimedia broadcasting, at real-time broadcast, the interactive program using BML is possible as well as the terrestrial digital broadcasting and digital BS. However, in 'mobacas' multimedia broadcasting, there are some different parts from the previous digital broadcasting, for example, existence of four colors buttons and up-down buttons on the receiver, availability of the communication function. Paying attention to such differences, in this paper, we report on the effect of interactive programming and production techniques in NOTTV.

In this paper, we report performance evaluation result for delivery server of ISDB-Tmm storage-based broadcasting. Storage-based broadcasting in ISDB-Tmm standards is a new broadcast service that enables multimedia contents files to deliver to receivers over broadcasting. We had developed delivery server for storage-based broadcasting follow the ISDB-Tmm standards. And we had evaluated the server by experiments, we confirmed satisfy a performance requirement from ISDB-Tmm standards.

Digital terrestrial television broadcasting services started in 2003 at three major cities in Japan and deployed over the nation by the end of 2006. In 2010, analog TV services were turned off on the 24th of July, 2011. It is difficult to establish a digital TV on mobile. The Doppler shift due to fast motion of the receiver generates the inter-channel interference and drastically degrades the performance. Also, the attenuation due to shadowing and fading phenomena is still a major problem for mobile reception of digital TV. There are limitations in size, complexity and power consumption of the receiver for mobile terminals. That is, it is difficult to apply complex algorithms to solve the problems. This paper introduces research and development activities for digital TV on mobile terminals to solve the difficulties mentioned above.

NHK is conducting research on Next-generation of Digital Terrestrial Broadcasting using UHF band to enable large-volume content services such as Super Hi-Vision. As a technology of SFN for Next-generation of Digital Broadcasting, we proposed a STC-SDM scheme (4x2 MIMO) that combines STC and dual-polarized MIMO-OFDM, and we studied on pilot signal scheme for the channel estimation of 4x2 MIMO transmission. We evaluated the characteristic of the transmission system which applied the pilot signal scheme by computer simulations and report on the results.

During live outside broadcasting (OB) of road races, such as marathons and ekiden, video images are taken using cameras on moving OB vans and the signals of the video images are transmitted by FPU in 700 MHz band. The frequency band for the FPU is planned to migrate to 1.2 and 2.3GHz bands by the action plan for radio spectrum reallocation developed by the ministry of internal affairs and communications. After the frequency migration of FPU, the transmission power will be higher than that of 700MHz band; however, few studies have been performed concerning the SAR on the human body due to the FPU considering the frequency migration. In this report, we designed a transmission antenna and calculated SAR with a numerical model of the human body. From the results, we found that the peak of 10g average SAR on human body with the case of narrow-directional antenna increases twice larger than that with the case of omni-directional antenna.

Frequency reallocation from 700-MHz band to 1.2/2.3-GHz band on FPU (Field Pick-up Unit) system, which is usually used for relay broadcasting of outdoor sports events such as road races, is being studied. For higher capacity and more reliable radio link in the new frequencies, the authors developed 2x2 STTC-MIMO-OFDM (Space-Time Trellis Code - Multiple-Input Multiple-Output - Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) system. Using this system, field tests on various road racing courses were conducted. In LOS (line of sight) environment of road racing operation, it was observed that the performance degradation occurred due to highly correlated MIMO channel. This report shows that the performance of STTC-MIMO in correlated MIMO channel can be improved by revising signal mapping rules, which was confirmed by computer simulation.

In order to find shaky images before broadcasting them, which probably evoke high unpleasantness of viewers, the author developed a system which estimates the unpleasantness degree evoked by shaking images in real time, and reported the system last year. It is necessary to modify the shaky images, which are estimated to evoke high unpleasantness but should be used in broadcasting programs, and to restrain the unpleasantness. The modification process, however, brings deterioration of picture quality. On the other hand, images containing a certain level of shakiness are preferred in some scenes. The author investigated the unpleasantness degree, picture quality and general preferability of modified shaky images, which belong to three different scene classification each, concerning to the modification level. As a result of psychological estimation experiments, the relationship between the most preferable level of residual shakiness and the scene classification.

We developed a recommendation experiment system aimed at performing the TV program recommendation that was suitable for an individual. That recommendation assumes that it is based on the interest estimated from actions of a viewer during the TV program watching. We describe the configuration summary of interest acquisition techniques and the recommendation system.
