Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of Iwate Prefectural Iwai Hospital was opened in 2007 and the inpatient clinic started in June 2008. We performed clinicostatistical observation on inpatients over the past 5 years from April 2009 to March 2013. The results were as follows: 1. The total number of inpatients was 406. 199 patients were males and 207 were females. The most common age of inpatients was 20-30 year olds (19.7%). 2. In regard to where they lived, 389 inpatients (95.8%) were from Iwate Prefecture, 323 inpatients (79.6%) were from Ichinoseki-city, 14 inpatients (3.5%) were from Miyagi Prefecture, and 3 inpatients were from other areas. 3. The distribution of disease of the inpatients were as follows: Tooth disorders were 226 (55.7%), cystic disorders were 67 (16.3%), inflammatory disorders were 53 (13.0%), neoplastic disorders were 36 (8.9%), and others were 25 (6.2%). 4. 314 operations were performed under general anesthesia and 38 were under local anesthesia. 54 were hospitalization for reasons such as anti inflammation or other reasons. 5. The average amount of hospitalized time was 8.6days. 6. 372 inpatients (91.6%) were referred to us from other clinics, and 13 patients (3.2%) were referred to us from other departments of our hospital. Dental clinics were the much source of referrals in the vast majority of outside patients. It was revealed that our department assumes an important role in south Iwate Prefecture and north Miyagi Prefecture.
