We conducted a 24-week clinical study in 20 women with skin and scalp hair problems (e.g., skin dryness, pigmented spots, roughness, thinning hair, and hair loss) and symptoms of ketsuo or kekkyo to investigate the effects of kamishoyosangoshimotsuto extract (KGS1) on skin condition and hair properties. Skin evaluation revealed significant improvements in stratum corneum moisture content, skin texture score, and spot brightness. Hair evaluation showed significant increases in hair thickness and hair breakage strength. Furthermore, we visually analyzed the effects of KGS1 on skin condition using facial photographs taken before and after test product treatment. In almost half of subjects, facial color and the skin color of spots were visibly brightened, skin dullness was improved, and skin luster was increased.

This article reviews glycation stress as a factor linked to age-related diseases and functional and structural alterations of the skin. Photo-aging and glycation stress are major causes of skin deterioration. Glycation occurs when a reducing sugar, such as glucose or fructose, combines with a protein in a non-enzymatic reaction forming a glycated protein. Further reactions form advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which may accumulate in tissue. AGEs may also bind to a receptor for AGEs (RAGE), thus inducing inflammatory changes in skin and other tissues. The concept of glycation stress includes cellular and tissue responses to reducing sugars and aldehydes, not just to the production of AGEs.Glycation stress may be induced and affected by many factors, including exposure to ultraviolet light, which drastically intensifies AGE accumulation. AGEs modify skin collagen by reducing skin elasticity, and one result is wrinkle formation. AGEs accumulated in skin may be detected using auto-fluorescence (AF); our data from 136 healthy Japanese females shows the AF level is correlated with age.Glycation stress, and subsequently skin aging, may be reduced by managing levels of blood glucose, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglyceride through an appropriate diet, lifestyle, and intake of anti-glycation materials such as AGE generation inhibitors, AGE decomposers, and AGE receptor antagonists. Study of glycation stress may help identify new anti-aging treatments.

The application of clinical nutrition to ageing populations requires the development of a high degree of multidisciplinarity with its related scholarship and skills. Clinical Nutrition is the prevention, diagnosis and management of nutritionally-related health problems (NRHP) by qualified health care practitioners. It may be practised by those specialised in it or in the course of work from primary to tertiary health care, in various major (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics & gynecology, and psychiatry) disciplines and in sub-specialties and for various age groups , notably children (paediatrics) and the elderly (geriatrics). With population ageing, the field of geriatric nutrition has grown. Its underpinning science and scholarship require contributions from ageing biology, the medical sciences, epidemiology, sociology, and bioethics; it must also be coordinated with the food system to ensure food security; its practitioners need an intimate knowledge of communities and households. It may be considered in several domains Geriatric Nutritional Epidemiology, Preventive geriatric nutrition, Diagnostic geriatric nutrition, Management geriatric nutrition- care, therapeutics, palliation and Nutrition and Ageing Economics and Community Geriatric Nutrition. Effective geriatric nutrition is a team and community endeavour.
