This study aims to elucidate the mechanism of alliances between companies and competitors in the context of sustainability strategies, and examines alliance cases of companies working on sustainability strategies together with competitors. Specifically, I take up and analyze an alliance case of Oita bank. This case study is an alliance that simultaneously collaborates with local governments, which are positioned as non-cooperating stakeholders like its competitors, and develops projects aimed at resolving regional issues.
As a result of the analysis, it was pointed out that in traditional business, there is a low degree of interdependence in alliances between companies and competitors that have a horizontal relationship, but in this case, it was derived that the situation is high. It was also found that alliance managers play a key role in conducting interorganizational learning with competitors. It was also confirmed that Oita Prefecture, which plays a mediator role, has an important position.
