    This paper addresses damage to houses related to ground motion characteristics on slope morphology in the case of Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture during the 2001 Geiyo, Japan, Earthquake (M6.4). In the valley morphology of the city, earthquake damage concentrated on slope areas. Main causes of damage to houses were due to fragilities of stonemasonry wall and foundation of houses, but not due to earthquake resistance of house structures. They especially occurred at the ridge on steep slope in the west, though slope failures often have taken place at the east slope due to heavy rainfall. Furthermore, damage to houses was mostly observed in the middle-height area on slopes. FEM calculation and field survey show that the ground motion on slope morphology becomes larger in the highly damaged area.
