32P is a-most quantitatively separated from the bulk of the sulfur target by shaking carbon disulfide or bromoform solution of neutron irradiated sulfur with dilute ammonia. On the other hand, extraction with an acid solution results in lower recovery. While bromoform is not a very good solvent for sulfur at room temperature because of its low solubility for sulfur, the solubility increases with temperature. lt has the advantage over carbon disulfide in that it is not inflammable.
From an aqueous extract,
32P can be purified by either anion-exchange resin, extraction or lantanium hydroxide coprecipitation. For the processing of
32P, the anionexchange method is the most convenient,
32P was obtained with a recovery of 85% by bromoform-ammonia extraction at 80°C followed by anion-exchange purlfication.
