Dispersions of Dy
2O
3 in W, ZrO
2 (CaO stabilized) and UO
2 were subjected to steep temperature gradient at near melting temperature of the respective matrixes, to determine the compatibility of Dy
2O
3 with W, ZrO
2 and UO
2.
The main results obtained are as follows:
(1) Dy
2O
3 is compatible with W up to 2, 300°C. Physically however the Dy
2O
3 was found to migrate and agglomerate in the central region, and become one sintered block.
(2) In the case of Dy
2O
3-ZrO
2, the Dy
2O
3 particles were no longer visible in the central region where the temperature was above 1, 900°C: they had formed a solid solution with ZrO
2.
(3) X-ray diffraction analysis applied ro the massive grain region of Dy
2O
3UO
2, where temperature was above 1, 900°C, revealed that Dy
2O
3 had formed a solid solution with UO
2.
