    A mass spectrometrical study has been performed with the view to ascertaining the origin of hydrogen gas emanating from UO2.
    The deuterium content in the hydrogen gas released from UO2 powder under a vacuum of 10-5mmHg after treating with heavy water, increases with the extraction temperature and reaches about 40a/0 at 1, 700°C. When the sample was treated with heavy water and then heated under the same vacuum condition at 400°C, the deuterium content in the hydrogen gas released under the same vacuum condition above 1, 000°C is nearly equal to that of natural hydrogen, and the amount of total hydrogen is very small in comparison with the case of untreated sample.
    From these experimental results, it is concluded that most of the hydrogen gas released from UO2 at high temperatures (>1, 000°C) probably results from the decom- position of water contained in the somple.

    Phosphorus-33 is a useful radioisotope of phosphorus for biological and medical restarch, for its long half life (25.4d) and low β-ray energy (0.25MeV) compared with 32P (14.3d, 1.70MeV).
    Two methods of production of this radioisotope in carrier free state have been already reported. 33S (n, p) reaction with reactor neutrons and 34S (γ, p) reaction with γ-rays from electron linear accelerator. These methods however use natural targets, and the resulting 33P/32P ratio is low.
    The present report describes a method for producing high ratio 33P/32P by 37Cl (γ, α) reaction with γ-rays from an electron linear accelerator giving a maximum energy of 18 MeV. For target material, NaCl and NH4Cl are taken up. The 33P/32P ratio of the phosphorus fraction after chemical separation with cation and anion exchange columns is about 12/1 at the end of irradiation when using NaCl as torget.

    As part of a Japanese national project for developing the Na-cooled fast breeder reactor and an advanced thermal D2O-moderated reactor, the Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation, entrusted with the responsibility of carrying out this project, has recently established an engineering research establishment named "O-arai Engineering Center" at O-arai, lbaraki-ken, Japan.
    An outline is given of this Engineering Center and the activities undertaken therein.
    The Center aims at carrying out such activities as large scale engineering tests of components and systems to be actually used in the two types of reactors, of such nature as to be beyond the capability of individual industrial organizations of the country, but which are essential for ascertaining the performance of these components and systems, and to acquire the engineering data necessary for design, manufacturing and operation of the reactors.
    The Center possesses the first Japanese experimental fast reactor "JOYO", Natechnology development facilities, D2O-moderated reactor engineering facilities, postirradiation examination facilities, D2O-moderated critical assembly, and other requisite equipment. Some of them are already operating, and others under construction or planned.
    An account is given of those facilities and equipment.
