The separation of radioiodine from water samples by isotopic exchange reactions was investigated to develop a sample treatment method for γ-spectrometric analysis of radioiodine in reactor coolant water.
The ion exchange resins in the I, IO
3 and OH form were prepared for the examination and comparison of their characteristics, and the collection of radioiodine on resins, washing of resins, and elution of radioiodine collected were studied by using the water samples containing
131I in the I
-, CH
3I and I
2 form.
The following results were obtained: (1) the collection efficiencies of the resins in the I form were greater than 99% for
131I
-, CH
3131I and
131I
2, and collection of CH
3131I and
131I
2 on the resins in the IO
3 and OH form was less than that on the resins in the I form, (2) greater than 99% of collected
131I was retained on the resins washed with 50m
l of 1%NaCl solution, and (3)
131I on the resins was not completely removed by elution with KI solution or perchloric acid; about 5% of
131I collected was retained.
