A method was proposed for estimating radionuclides migration through an aerated zone with consideration of unsteady soil moisture infiltration process. Two fundamental equations were described, one of which was for soil moisture migration by capillary flow and another one was for radionuclide transportation by soil moisture. This estimation method was examined against experimental results on
90Sr distribution in a model aerated sand bed, those had been reported in detail in previous paper.
Some valuable results have been obtained: (1) Proposed method could depict the
90Sr transportation pattern in a model aerated sand bed. (2) Distribution coefficient kd
u of
90Sr between soil and soil moisture depends on soil moisture content. This fact is derived from computer aided numerical experiments. (3) Approximate estimation method proposed by Inoue & Akaki shows large conservative estimation error in
90Sr migration rate through soil layer.
